Necromancer

A necromancer is among the most loathed of all people on Weirth, certainly the most feared and despised of the Magic-Users. With Death and Remembrance playing such an important part in the cultures of Weirth, is is an unforgivable horror to disrupt the path of the spirit.   The cultural practices designed to hasten the spirit of the departed to the next world, and to keep their body at rest, are among the most important features of every society. Necromancers break these practices, for personal gain, by taking control of dead bodies, commanding un-departed spirits, and draining the energy from the souls of others, living or dead.   There are many demons and supernatural entities who relish the thought of denying rest and repose to the bodies and spirits of the dead. Arcanists steeped in the study of death use their contacts with these beings of the Outerdark to gain power and (wittingly or unwittingly) further the agendas of these creatures.   The practice of Necromancy is illegal in every place and nation on Weirth, except in Zygaraia, where is is hidden and disguised as a study of practices and procedures for actually moving the spirits of the deceased toward the Dreamlands. While the animation and Return of the bodies of the dead are illegal, the Magic-Users of Zygaria see it as splitting hairs.    To a Zygarian Necromancer, the Ritual of Departure is a wasted opportunity for gaining knowledge and power over those close to the departed. The pirates of the Sea of Jamul have a expression, that "Dead men tell no tales", but to a Necromancer that is just not true at all. The dead have plenty to say!

Operations

Tools

The tools of the Necromancer are basically the same as for any Arcanist, a bowl for incorporating the components, a wand or such for a focus (though generally a personally-crafted staff) and a specialized fetish made from a skull and a garnet, for control of the undead. This fetish is often an amulet, but can be made with larger skulls and gems for a larger area of effect.   Blood sacrifice is a common method of powering spells, rather than a sympathetic brazier. Higher-level Necromancers will often summon and bind demons and supernatural entities, then Channel their power into spellcrafting.
