Way of the Stars

The Way of the Stars is practiced by the Tribes of Mare'n, both the human and vasati. It is virtually unheard of for it to be practiced by those with no tribal affiliation. The Way primarily involves the worship of one goddess, Liril, Lady of the Sun, alongside the reverence of their ancestors, whom they refer to as the Stars.

Tenets of Faith

Starseekers are monolatristic; believers in many gods, but worshippers of only their goddess (though if it seems appropriate in the moment or circumstance, they are known to pay their respects to the gods of others). They also place great value in the insights and experiences of their ancestors, contacting them for guidance nearly as often as their goddess.

The Starseekers believe in protection and responsible stewardship of natural resources and other creatures, bonds of family and community, protection of those who cannot protect themselves, and violence only in protection of self and others.

Dogma
The three main tenants of The Way of the Stars are:
  • Repect for all life
  • Responsible use of magic
  • Responsible use of resources
  • Self-determination within these principles
Further clarification of the application of these principles is up to the tribe or the individual.

Clergy

Those who serve Liril amongst the Tribes are generally referred to as Starguides, or just Guides. They are usually clerics, paladins, or monks; individuals with a personal connection of some sort to the goddess. It is incredibly rare (and discouraged) for a tribesperson to choose a life as a Guide without such a connection. Her clergy choose the life when they are in their late teens or early young adulthood, and apprentice to one of their tribe's current clergy for many years. They then serve her and their tribes for the rest of their life.

Hierarchy
There is no hierarchy of Starguides between tribes. Within a tribe, seniority is generally the only hierarchy in case of multiple guides in a tribe.

Temples
The followers of Liril do not practice their faiths in temples or established places of worship. What holy symbols, relics, or trappings of worship that they have are kept in the Starguide's tent or home, or are personal to each Tribesperson.

Vestments
Starguides generally wear the clothes of their people. However, they have one religious vestment of their choice - typically a shawl, tunic, cloak, or scarf type piece - upon which they embroider symbols or words to remind them of important things: meetings with Liril, judgements they have made, lives they have affected, advice they have received, mistakes they have made, etc. Each Guide also keeps a personal holy symbol and an astrolabe on them at all times.
