The Veil

If you a player in this world, please be advised this article most likely contains content that is intended to be a 'secret' to your character. Proceed at your own risk.

Though completely undiscovered by most of the world, there is a settlement on the island in the middle of Eron Lake. They've managed to keep their existence a secret from the humans of the Second Immigration with a combination of magic and trickery, and so far, they like it that way.   The inhabitants of Eron Island are members of The Folk organization known as The Court Behind the Veil or the High Court of the Veil, or in some cases, non-member residents. They don't like to call them prisoners, really, but once you've come to the island, generally, if you aren't Folk, you aren't leaving. Not even all of the Folk have the ability to come and go at will.

Society and Culture

The People
The original population of the Court are the "lost" Faedin, or "High Magics" that were believed to have died out between the First and Second Immigrations. They are the full citizens of the island. Newcomers are generally not welcome or encouraged, but the population is supplemented on occasion by refugees, those who stumble upon the island despite the inhabitant's best efforts to the contrary, or those with new skills or knowledge who are brought in on purpose.   Population Centers
The island itself is small, and so there is only one large city in the center.   Languages
Many languages are heard in the Veil. There is no 'official' language, but most business can be conducted in Common for ease of all involved. There is a Folk-dialect spoken amongst the 'natives' of the court that is no longer known outside of the island's borders.   Religion
Like most of the Folk, religion is not a big focus. They have a respect for deities, and some even form a reltionship with an individual god or goddess here or there, but a general respect for life and the world around them is more common than any organized religion. However, they love a good celebration, and aren't above finding excuses to celebrate all the celebrations from all the religions!

Geopolitics

Government
Like most fae-folk Courts, the Court of the Veil is ruled by a King or Queen. This individual serves until either they die, they choose to abdicate, or they are challenged to formal duel by someone else. The challenger chooses the type of challenge - a game, a physical duel, riddles, etc. - but the current High Council sets the terms of Winning or Losing. At any time, either challenger or challenged can choose to forfeit instead of continue the challenge. The monarch can appoint an heir if they abdicate, but that heir can be challenged immediately just as they could have been.   The High Court appoints its own members, and affirms them by majority vote. Members can be removed - with the exception of the monarch - by majority vote as well. The High Court consists of the Monarch, at least one representative for each of the Three Races (Dracanis, Marelis, and Vasati), and three other Folk, one of whom must be Faedin. Inhabitants of the Island cannot be appointed to the High Court unless they have been granted residency.   Foreign Relations
The Court Behind the Veil has taken great pains not to reveal itself to any Human government, and to some extent, this includes concealing itself from other Folk and the Three Races to prevent the secret from leaking. There is a limited amount of relations with certain entities in high positions of power within non-human governments, and with intelligence agencies within the non-human races.   Economy
They are generally self-sufficient, or near to being so, and where they are not, those few who are cleared to travel in and out do trading and work on behalf of the Court.

The arms of the Veil are always depicted on a round shield. Lozengy gray and purple party per fess counterchanged on an orle white overall an owl addorsed and elevated black in pale with an owl addorsed and elevated reversed.
