Personal history
Melker was the acknowledged son of Prince Gaire Talat, who was later adopted into the household of his uncle King Tahir Talat.
His adoptive father abdicated in favor of Melker when he was nearly 150 years old, but by that point, Melker had already taken over the leadership of the Kingdom's armies almost entirely; Tahir was recorded musing that if the War of Conquest was to ever end, it would be Melker who would accomplish it. And indeed, Melker did end the war, though his methods were known for being brutal and unforgiving. Upon the end of the war, he declared himself Emphir of a new Brilliant Empire, rather than King of Ostar.
He was largely too busy with the military to worry about anything else, and had only a single child, Princess Hesna Talat , whom he did not father until he was 92 years old at the desperate demands of his family and council that he find or make an heir. Unlike most of his family, it was not merely a matter of only choosing to acknowledge one heir - for all anyone was ever aware, Melker truly only ever had the one child, and did not marry her mother; nor did he many any attempts to bring any children of his siblings under the Royal household.
His methods and attitude during the war cemented the rest of the world's negative opinion of what was Ostar and would become the Empire.
