Lastar School
The Lastar School is operated by the Lastar Temple of the Senary. It is both a free institution for the children of the orphanage at the temple and the best and the brightest of scholarship receipients from the surrounding area, as well as a tuition-paid school for the well-to-do and noble families in the area. They are known all across the Brilliant Empire for providing an excellent, well-rounded education that prepares students for careers or the university of their choice.
Students at the Upper School study the basics such as maths, writing, and logic; but they also study many other courses such as magic, religion, languages, and comportment. The older students get, they more individualized their studies become. Many Upper School students will go on to University or excellent careers.
Upper School pupils have a wider variety of clothing. Those who are coming from the orphanage have a day-to-day wardrobe very similar to the Lower School pupils, as this is what is provided by the Temple unless they are provided with or purchase other things, such as specialized clothes for studying certain trades or activities. Some choose to spend pocket money on clothes, and are allowed to do so. They may also take clothes from donations that come in to the Temple. Those coming to the boarding school from wealthy families wear a wider variety of things - but it is made very clear that anything extravagant that would feel out of place is not permitted. Most choose to adopt the same basic wardrobe of loose pants, tunics, and udnershirts as the Lower School pupils, though in different fabrics and colors.
Below the Head of School, there is a Lower School Head and an Upper School Head. These individuals report to the Head of School and supervise the teachers and staff in their division.
The Cohort Parents, who are each responsible for 6-12 students who live in their wing, also report directly to the Head of School in their Cohort Parent capacity, though most also report to one of the division heads in their capacity as a teacher.
There is also a student-elected Head Student, whose job it is to lead a Student Council which consists of three students from the Lower School, three students from the Upper School, and the Head Student. These students report student concerns back to the adult leadership, through the Head Student who sits on the School Council.
The School Council consists of the Head of School, the Lower School Head, the Upper School Head, and one representative chosen specifically to represent the Cohort Parents.
Divisions
Lower School
The Lower School serves children from when they begin school to usually the age of 10-13, when they would transition into the Upper School. Most of the Lower School children are children who live in the city of Lastar, including all of those housed in the Lastar Temple orphanage, but there is a small subset of boarding school pupils in the Lower School as well. Lower School boarding pupils are housed with the children of the orphanage.Upper School
Pupils start at or transition to the Upper School usually between the ages of 10 to 13. All Upper School students are boarding students; they are housed in Cohorts of 6-12 students and assigned a Cohort Parent who is responsible for all of their needs outside of the classroom. Most Cohort Parents are teachers at the school or other clergy, and almost all are partnered, giving students the most stable home environment possible.Students at the Upper School study the basics such as maths, writing, and logic; but they also study many other courses such as magic, religion, languages, and comportment. The older students get, they more individualized their studies become. Many Upper School students will go on to University or excellent careers.
Day to Day Life
Uniforms
Lower School pupils wear a uniform similar to that of most Senarian children - brown or tan pants, an undyed tunic, and and undershirt of various colors denoting grade, group, or other divisions. They wear soft thin-soled indoor slippers most of the time, though they are permitted boots for riding and outdoor activities as needed, especially if the weather is particularly wet.Upper School pupils have a wider variety of clothing. Meals
All students are provided lunch in the school's dining hall. Students who live in the orphanage eat breakfast and dinner as well as non-study-day meals at the orphanage. Upper School students eat most meals in the dining hall, sitting anywhere they'd like for breakfast and lunch. At supper or dinner, they sit with their cohort. Sometimes a cohort will also eat together outside of the dining hall, on special occasions.Schedules
The older the student, the more varied the schedule as students begin to have specialized areas of study and advance beyond large classes. Some pupils even move to take independent study courses with mentors or elsewhere in the temple.Structure and Culture
Structure and Leadership
The school is under the jurisdiction of Lastar Temple of the Senary, but most day-to-day decisions are made by the Head of School. Generally, the Temple only steps in if there are believed to be problems with the running of the school, or when a new Head of School needs to be selected.Below the Head of School, there is a Lower School Head and an Upper School Head. Culture
The culture of Lastar school is overwhelmingly one of growth and learning. The focus for the Lower School students is to teach all the basics and make good students, while the Upper School students are expected to excel in all of their classes as well as continue to show character growth. Good recommendations from faculty at Lastar can open doors just about anywhere, but those who can't or won't conform to the expectations are also at risk of being removed from the program.Assets
Alumni are generous. Students and staff want for nothing in search of an excellent education. To feed the body, we eat. To feed the soul, we learn.
