Caffa
Basic Information
Anatomy
The Caffa Vine consists of a woody vine that grows on the jungle trees, sometimes all the way from the jungle floor to the canopy. At semi-regular intervals along the vine the plant grows in regular configurations: two leaves and a bundle of 5-10 berries. The leaves of the plant are an elongated cordate, or heart shape, and have a waxy coating. They are a dark green with large oblong chartreuese spots which are distributed evenly along both sides. The berries are a shiny reddish-chestnut color on the outside. The leaves of this plant always grow in pairs. They can be up to two feet long.
Growth Rate & Stages
Caffa is incredibly quick-growing, but easy to kill. Caffa berry harvesters must take care not to damage vines or leaves or the plant will die.
Ecology and Habitats
Caffa grows as a vine in the jungles of Mare'n. Attempts to cultivate it other places have failed.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
The berry and vine of the Caffa plant are used to make the drink Caffah, which is usually enjoyed hot. The berries are fermented and the woody vine is ground. A good mix of the two makes Caffah and the blends are proprietary to the maker. A bad blend can cause indigestion or even be poisonous.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
Caffa vines require the tall jungle trees to climb in order to survive. They tend to prefer towering hardwoods, and some species of trees seem to contain a toxin that prevents the delicate Caffa from growing.
