Elf Hunter Code

Derived from a combination of ancient hunting symbols and common military slang, the Elf Hunter's Code is a language of symbols used primarily by the Mystwalkers and several adjacent military factions.   While the original hunting symbols have been in use for millennia, particularly in areas where literacy is low, the current code has only been in use for the last several hundred years or so. It was picked up by the Cynian military during the early expansion efforts of the kingdom. Originally used to mark out buildings that elves might potentially be hiding in, today the code is used to mark maps for the Mystwalkers to reference when scouting areas to purge of their long-eared enemies.   The symbols are placed on the back of a map, such that they only show over the map itself when held up to a light or when placed on a Crystal Table. This, combined with the use of a special ink that only appears when facing direct light, helps ensure that elf spies and their allies cannot tamper with the maps or anticipate their raids on potential elf hideouts.   While it can be easy enough to determine what certain symbols mean from context, it's important to understand the origin of the usage of the rabbit and wolf symbols within the code. The rabbit symbol is derived from various derogatory terms thrown around by the military about elves, particularly pertaining to their long ears. Because the elves are seen as cowardly, running and hiding rather than actually standing up and fighting for themselves, the Mystwalkers found it appropriate to use as shorthand for their prey. This leads directly into the usage of the wolf. Being fierce and merciless hunters, the Mystwalkers use tactics not dissimilar to those of wolves. It seemed an apt metaphor and thus has stuck within the code through the centuries, even as some of the other symbols changed.
