Heights of Horyon Range

The mountain range of the Horyon Mountains is often regarded as a strategic boon and curse wrapped up into one. The lower valleys and connections to the coasts make it desirable, while the peaks create strange monsters and creatures that threaten survival regularly.

Geography

The ranges act as natural border between the Cavernous Abyss and the Extinct Expanse. The peaks of these mountains are so saturated with ethereal energy that they have become lethal to most species and humanoids. Large pockets of the energy create unnatural mutations to the environment.

Ecosystem

The entirety of the surrounding ecosystem had to accommodate such massive spikes of lethal Ethereal Energy. The Flora and Fauna grew several sizes and began to develop strange mutations. This included bioluminescence and consumption of the energy to survive. The only streaks of water that dot the ranges contain millions of tiny specks of infused dirt, ingestion of the liquid containing the amount present is lethal.

Ecosystem Cycles

The peaks of the mountains are effected by the change of seasons, but only in the locations lacking in any extreme force of energy. Creatures around often retreat to the extreme locations during the unpleasant weather of the seasons, choosing to use their adaptations to ride out the changes and returning after its passing.

Localized Phenomena

The pockets of energy can create uneven levels of temperature throughout the ranges. Some of the spouts create such heat that they can keep an area of several miles in a constant state of burning. Certain peaks have pockets of freeze that perform exactly the opposite.

History

It is said that the Gods and Goddesses of the world met again atop the peaks to discuss what all had transpired. The anger and discontent of those present split the ground and rock around, launching disformed spikes of energy to shear through the rock face themselves. A short battle was fought atop those peaks, and though the winners are unknown the extent of the damage was reduced. No stories were told of the death of Gods or Goddesses, no change was made in the history. Only the Eldest amongst the surrounding villages still remember the event with any level of clarity.
