Chitin Material in World of Arsteria | World Anvil

Chitin

The natural material used for most forms of weapons, armors, defenses, and other small items, is the organic Chitin that grows on the back of the Gigantious Coleoptious that have several cities along their back. Citizens work to mine the excess chitin that grows outward and form small pockets of spiked areas. These can form rather quickly, given the natural biology of the creatures and their inherit ability to grow their chitinous shell extremely fast.

Without access to the many materials that have helped to create society throughout the ages, being the materials of wood, metal, or even hardened sand, the peoples of the Hestrian Desert had to accomodate to the different items around them with the simple and non-convoluted technique of harvesting Chitin from the backs of the Giant Beetles with cities built along their backs. Society formed around the beetles of the desert, grew with them as they increased in size, and maintained the civilization using the actions that would have othewise been required.

Items as small as utensils and sheers are made of the chitin, sharpened using grindstones and other forms of natural sharpening techniques. Magic is used to remove large chunks of the chitin from the back of the beetles during their times of harvest, often requiring the assistance of people using the Chitinous hardware in the process. Magic, being the solution, means that people have to work around the shifting of the Ethereal energy, making the enviroment of the work far different. Being exposed to large amounts of Ethereal magic without proper safety measures, especially in the desert where magic is hightened, can result in strange outcomes. Floating, purple spots, change of gender, the whole process can result in a number of differing effects.
