Kar

Kar is an island within the Gathleen Isles. It is known for being the most fortified island within the archipelago, with the mighty Fort Ironstow being built on the island. It has withstood many attacks from the Ulthrank to the north.

Geography

The island has a slightly warmer, yet rocky south that is full of jagged rocks and dramatic terrain. To the north is a far more bitter and colder climate. Trees exist in small pockets, while the rocky terrain continues. A small river is formed at the west that leads to giant sheets of ice. On the northern mountains of the island sits Fort Ironstow.   To the east of the fort lies Iceforge, the only forge known to be powered by ice instead of lava and fire. Demon Watch sits to the west, which is used to spot advancing Ulthrank and be the first to alert the island. It is said those who are stationed atop the tower are sentenced to death, due to so many freezing to death.

History

In the year 5700 2E, the Ulthrank, wishing to restore their control of the Gathleen Isles, send a large amount of forces to recapture them, in what was to become known as the War of Barreness. The Dwarves would be pushed back, but the forces in Fort Ironstow, on the island of Kar, would hold, and ultimately be surrounded.   The fort was led by the daighter of the chief of Clan Mahraodan, Hawor Galor. There stood just five hundred Dwarves from the advancing hordes of Ulthrank. The Ulthrank would throw themselves against the frozen walls of the fort, but each time, they would fail, sometimes, with zero Dwarven casualties. This would allow the Dwarves back in Guilnile to regroup and recover strength to counter-attack the Ulthrank, who were now too prideful and too stubborn to let up on their siege.    The Ulthrank had made make-shift trebuchets from the trees on Kar, and had been launching ice over the walls of Fort Ironstow. Hawor, seeing this as unacceptable, who sally forth with her bravest goat riders and capture four of the trebuchets, and she would hold off the Ulthrank as they were wheeled into the fort.    Needing time to regroup, and to be relieved of the siege, the Dwarves would then launch the ice from the trebuchets at the mountains to the west, causing an avalanche that would kill many Ulthrank, but also give them time before the Ulthrank siege would continue.    It was at this point that Hawor, knowing that a final Ulthrank attack, the likes of which they had never seen, was coming, would travel to the Iceforge, and reactive the ancient forge to craft weapons and armor that were immune to the ice weapons of the Ulthrank.    The day would finally come, when the Ulthrank had cleared away the debris from the avalanche and decend upon the fort with untold thousands. Hawor and her remaining defenders would stand firm, and though the Ulthrank would manage to breach the walls, they would ultimately hold the fort long enough for reinforcements from Guilnile to come and relieve them, saving the fort.
