Glomes

Description

Somewhere in the Whistletop Ranges, deep beneath the rock, in ancient caves, live a peculiar type of folk called Glomes. Related to both the Moorland Gnomes and the Sgnomes they are the smallest of the Gnomes, at no more than one and a half feet tall.   They have the same abundance of hair and beard as their top side cousins, which also serves as a form of warmth, but has the additional benefit of allowing them to see. Their hair and beards glow, you see, giving off a warm light that extends up to three feet from their bodies. Whether this is a genetic peculiarity due to their environment or a side effect of their diet is unknown, as they are a very reclusive people and not many folk have encountered them.

The Importance of Glow

Not only does the light help the Glomes to navigate their oftimes pitch black environment, they also feature heavily in the Glomes social culture. To the untrained eye the light that emanates from the Glomes may appear to all be the same, but this is not the case. There are subtle differences in the luminosity and shade, which are very noticeable to other Glomes and can indicate many different things such as health, age, extreme moods etc. When in a healthy and content state each Glome will emit their own distinct Glow, this natural Glow is what helps to attract a partner, as different Glomes prefer different types of Glows.

Master Shapers

The Glomes live in tall elegant towers which they shape from the stone around them. They have learned to domestic a type of grublike creature, which they call Rumblebugs, that is able to soften stone through vibrations. The Glomes will use a "choir" of these bugs in order to soften the stone enough for the Shapers to shape them into buildings. The cave system in which they live has many pillars of rock, some which stretch from floor to ceiling, and the Glomes have turned nearly all into beautifuly hollowed and shaped towers.
