Situation Overview

Kali Yama Weapons Industries Incorporated has invested some money developing weaponry in-house, and would like to test these weapons in a live-fire exercise. These weapons include the Irian Weapons Works Class 4 SRM-4, the Type IVE LRM-15, the Type V LRM-20, the Kali Yama Brahmastra Autocannon/10, the Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannon/20, and the Hellion V Medium Laser. Since these all have new production lines opening up, a field test will determine if they are being produced to proper specifications and allow the company to receive actual combat data on their performance.
The Harbingers are being issued a field refit of these weapons and are instructed to select pilots to stay within a proscribed limitation of power. They are to engage Squad Epsilon in the field and test these new weapons without intentionally destroying the target 'Mechs. As such special rules of engagement have been issued to both sides, and target buildings have been placed which will act as mission objectives. It is expected the Harbingers' results will be very enlightening for the company representative.

Objectives

Primary Objective: The company representatives would like to see the weapons in action to determine their potential. Fire each weapon product at least once.
Secondary Objective: The company is paying well for a good show, by either side. Score points by hitting with weapon strikes, destroying buildings, or defeating members of the Epsilon Squad. If the Harbingers have the higher score, they will be paid Warchest Points equal to half their score; if they have the lower score, they will be paid the same amount in Supply Points instead.
Weapon Strikes
  • SRM-4 (10)
  • LRM-15 (15)
  • LRM-20 (20)
  • AC/10 (20)
  • AC/20 (40)
  • Medium Laser (10)
Units Defeated
  • Light (10)
  • Medium (25)
  • Heavy (40)
  • Assault (100)
  • Building (5x CR)

Setup

The testing range has been scouted out in the outskirts of Vernier City, represented by the official maps: "Battletech" and "Lake Area" found in the Introductory Box Set. Three target buildings are set up as Level 1, 1 Hex buildings with 20 CP. One target building is set up as Level 2, 2 Hex building with 50 CP. Two target buildings are set up as Level 2, 1 Hex buildings with 15 CP.
The Epsilon Squad participants will begin inside the mock firebase, and must have another friendly unit and a building within three hexes of themselves. To this, the two Wasp 'Mechs set up on the right flank and the two Orion 'Mechs set up on the left. The Harbingers' Lance will begin within three hexes of their home edge, and must be within three hexes of each other unit. This was simplified by them simply arraying themselves shoulder to shoulder before moving forward into the starting positions to await the signal to begin.

Special Rules

Weapons Test Rules: A variation on Forced Withdrawal, the following rules are in place for this engagement. A unit will be forced out of the exercise if any of the following are true: a unit has lost a limb, or if armor breaches happen within at least two torso segments, or if at least four locations take internal structure damage. If all testing weapons which use ammunition have been used up, the unit will proceed to withdraw to a specified location and be powered down; it may, during said withdrawal, continue to engage but it must move at least its walk rating towards the 'Out of Bounds' area. Once in the specified area, it may not make another attack action of any kind.
Limited Ammunition: All testing weapons as listed above are issued only one ton of ammunition each. This means each ammunition count is as follows: SRM-4 (25), AC/10 (10), AC/20 (5), LRM-15 (8), LRM-20 (6).
Target Buildings: The target buildings are little more than shells with no internal supports, making them much more fragile than actual combat targets. Building A is a mock command station with 50 CR. Buildings B and C are mock power stations with 15 CR. Buildings D, E, and F are mock storage buildings with 20 CR.

Special Abilities

Beta Version Targeting and Tracking Systems: The Epsilon Squad has been issued adjusted Wasat Aggressor targeting and tracking systems. Each member of the Testing Squad must reroll any die which show either a 1 or a 6 on weapons attacks. [/br] Beta Version Jump Control Systems: The Epsilon Squad has been issued Rawlings 52a model Jump Jets for all applicable units. They may add +1 to their Jump Distance but build 2 Heat for each space they move instead of the usual 1 Heat. Any unit which uses the Beta Version models must make a Piloting check on landing to avoid falling.[/br] Lucky: Sometimes you just find luck when you least expect it. For each point of Lucky, this pilot may reroll one Gunnery or Piloting roll per scenario.
Multi-Tasker: Whenever you want to exploit a target-rich environment, or just need to have your attention divided, it's difficult. However, this pilot reduces all attacks against secondary targets by a -1 To-Hit bonus after working on their ability to split their focus.
Range Master: This pilot has trained to fire more accurately at a different range than normal. They swap their short range penalty for the designated range penalty (either medium or long range this means their short range is now less accurate but their chosen range is more accurate.
Weapon Specialist: Training and time have brought a sense of a particular weapon and how to get the most out of it. This unit has a -2 To-Hit bonus with their chosen weapon.

Battle Report

Prelude

"Welcome to the testing area. I'm Mara Dehjanua, from Kali Yama Weapons Industries Incorporated, here to observe the engagement with additional aerial observers. You all have been outfitted by the most modern models of our weapons, and now we would like to gather data on how they perform in an actual combat environment. This will be a live-fire exercise, which will be scored. Observers will declare the winner by a score aggregated from the ability to both eliminate opponents and to either defend or destroy the target buildings."
"When your 'Mech reports an armor breach in two sections, you will withdraw. When you run out of the alloted ammunition supply for your weapons, you must withdraw. We are not fighting to the death, or any other such method here. We merely wish to collect combat data, and the only thing on the line is your paycheck should you not abide by the simple terms signed by your superiors. If you have any questions, observers will patch into both sides' comm networks on a pre-designated channel to explain and adjudicate any issues."
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we eagerly await your demonstration."

Turn One

The Harbingers' Mongoose moved forward quickly, and the Wasps of Epsilon Squad moved forward to engage it. Despite this, one Wasp took damage enough to take it out as per the rules of engagement and began to retreat. As well, the Harbingers moved their Atlas and Hunchback up the middle and their Cataphract flanked to the right of their forces. Epsilon Squad moved its Orion and Hunchback 'Mechs into the forest to intercept the Atlas and Hunchback, intending to begin the test in earnest.

Turn Two

The retreating Wasp, having gotten out of the way, shut down and would wait out the rest of the test. Meanwhile, the Hunchbacks both strode forward towards each other in the open to open fire on the other, while the Orion ON1-V tagged it with its weaponry. In the end, the Harbingers' Hunchback had received enough damage to concede the field. The ON1-K on the other flank ran into the Cataphract and engaged that, while the Mongoose swiftly moved to the building objectives to begin scoring off them.

Turn Three

The engagement continued, the Cataphract moving into position and the two Orions both turned their attention to the Atlas. The Epsilon Hunchback added to the pile as armor was either blown clear or melted under the barrage. The heat scales on both Orion 'Mechs began to sound a preliminary warning, but the Atlas simply continued its forward motion, undaunted.

Turn Four

The Epsilon Hunchback was removed from the test by a combination of damage from the Atlas and the Cataphract, even as the ON1-K changed focus to lay into the Cataphract and the ON1-V attempted to blow into the back armor of the Atlas. The Mongoose diverted itself to menace the ON1-V but by now the end result was clear enough. The observers requested one more round, before ending the demonstration, to see if the Atlas could weather the fight.

Turn Five

With two overheating Orion 'Mechs remaining, Epsilon Squad tried to draw the Atlas for a pincer attack but failed to really capitalize on it due to the pilot of the Atlas refusing to chase down the ON1-K. Salvos proceeded to shred more armor off the back side of the Atlas, but return fire made the ON1-K surrender. With the heat having built up to critical levels for the ON1-V it also decided it was pointless to continue the exercise and signaled a withdrawal.

Aftermath

"It is too bad, the ability of the Mongoose MON-67 to slip past screens cost you the points lead, Captain Jones. I nevertheless congratulate you, the sheer amount of damage which was suffered to both the remaining Atlas and Cataphract would render other 'Mechs incapable of combat. We do, however, have a clear winner. The Harbingers' lance has demonstrated their ability admirably, and now we will issue payment as agreed upon to their accounts. Feel free to keep the weapons installed if you choose. Miss Padilla, other members of the Harbingers, we thank you for your time." | Mara Dehjanua, Demonstration Supervisor

Damage Report

All repair and rearming costs are being generously covered by Kali Yama Weapons Industries Incorporated, and performed by their own technician teams.

Mission Report

As the final score for the Harbingers was greater at a total of 1320 points, they were awarded 660 Warchest Points for their participation as well as the thanks of the company representatives for a good show.
