Vesper Klasst
Beyond the Old Docks lies the maze-like home of the city’s gallows-scum called the Reikerbahn, secretly ruled by the self-styled “Emperor of the Altdorf underworld” known as Herr Klasst although amongst the mythology of the lower classes he is usually referred to as 'Herr Cross'. A reference to the habit he has of marking those who cross him with a cross courtesy of the edge of a sharp razor blade.
Klasst’s organisation is so efficient in its practices and accounting that it is sometimes mockingly called 'The Thieves’ Guild', although the system of checks and balances Herr Klasst maintains and the harsh punishments for those who break the rules means the underworld is run to a higher standard than any actual guild of the city.
Being a Ranaldian organisation any brutality required is sub-contracted to other organisations and consider Operation Expenditure. The independant stevedores organisation known as 'The Fish' are commonly used as a source of general muscle when Klasst wants to send a message but does not want to deploy assassins.
In return, the Fish do much of their business through Klasst’s black marketeers like the famously well-connected Mother Mandelbaum. Klasst’s contacts are among the few clients they do not skim from.
The business arrangement between the Fish and Herr Klasst has been a profitable arrangement for some time and both organisations have benefitted from it. It has created a virtual monopoly that other smuggling rings and crime lords in the city of Altdorf of the city have to deal with. The Marienburg Fish are of course affiliated to 'The Fish' in Altdorf, but other organisations like 'The Huydermans' gang and 'The Lowhaven' halfling family have found the competition to be a major thorn in their side that they would happily see removed. Whether they have the canniness and business acumen to actually take over the criminal underworld of the Empire, Herr Klasst is always keen to put these rivals in their place and make his mark on them as large as possible.
