Akeklnur Condition in Westerheim | World Anvil

Akeklnur

A respiratory illness common in Southern Chereladi, especially among the Chiche.

Transmission & Vectors

Associated with sleeping outdoors, especially in spring and fall. Also present in grazing animals such as horses, cattle, sheep, and goats.

Causes

Thought to be from inhaling spores from sleeping on the ground.

Symptoms

Most people complain of chills, fever, and fatigue, developing into coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and nausea or vomiting. Over the course of two or three days, coughing and shortness of breath worsen and some people complain of headache, increasing fever, increasing fatigue, and an altered mental status which includes hallucinations and paranoia. Shock and sudden death can occur within 48 hours.

Treatment

Most treatments involve reducing symptoms such as fever and coughing with feverfew, echinacea and anise tinctures. If the fever can be contained, the infection is likely to burn itself out without killing the patient.   The monks of Tsisi Shrine have been experimenting with alternative treatments which they hope will more quickly resolve the symptoms and perhaps allow for inoculation and prevention.

Prognosis

70% of cases resolve themselves with treatment.   Without treatment, mortality is likely, around 90%.
