Birdfolk
Backstory and Deeper Lore
Birdfolk origins lie high above the world in ancient sky sanctuaries where tribes lived near floating rock formations and wind-carved peaks. When the Great Sundering reshaped Weglindth, violent atmospheric magic collided with the mountains, altering the tribes caught within its path.
Their newly formed wings, enhanced senses and connection to storm energies allowed them not only to survive the chaos but to claim the skies as their domain. In the centuries following the Sundering, Birdfolk became guardians of passes, watchers of horizon storms and stewards of air travel.
Legends speak of early Birdfolk who could ride winds strong enough to carry them between mountains in moments, and sages who read omens in cloud spirals. Marquis Kroowk Ael’Varyn belongs to this storied lineage: proud, disciplined and shaped by skyborne tradition.
Today Birdfolk societies remain elevated both physically and culturally, forming enclaves in places where others rarely venture.
Culture and Social Structure
Birdfolk culture revolves around:
- discipline and mastery
- perspective and truth
- responsibility to community
- respect for wind and sky
Their settlements are architectural marvels, built on cliff walls, high pillars or spires connected by bridges, platforms and open-air flight lanes. Homes have open balconies for takeoff, carved wind channels and storm shelters built into the stone.
Leadership is earned through wisdom, flight mastery or service to the community. Scholars, watchers and wind-sages hold great respect.
Cultural rites include:
- Sky Rite of First Flight – adolescents proving flight readiness
- The High Vigil – meditative watch from a mountain perch
- Storm Calling Ceremonies – performed by Windtouched lineages
Storytelling is melodic and rhythmic, often accompanied by wind instruments or feathered drums.
Nature, Essence and Role in the World
Birdfolk embody freedom, clarity and guardianship from above. Their true flight gives them unmatched mobility and vantage. Many can sense air pressure shifts, coming storms or magical turbulence before any other race notices. Some Windtouched can subtly guide wind currents, gliding effortlessly or creating controlled bursts of air.
Birdfolk presence stabilizes highland settlements and protects trade routes that cross dangerous heights.
Intellect and Temperament
Birdfolk minds are shaped by perspective, both physical and philosophical. They think in long arcs, consider consequences and speak plainly.
They value mastery over bravado and often judge others by consistency rather than charisma.
Conflicts are handled directly and swiftly. Praise is given sparingly but sincerely.
Behavior and Habits

Their diet includes high-energy foods, fish, grains, fruits and stormleaf herbs used to maintain stamina during flight.
