One-Eyed Barnabas

Sir Barnabas Pintu Unwin (a.k.a. Barmy-Barny)

Barnabas Unwin, better known by his honorific "One-Eyed Barnabas", was a lethal and effective pirate of Yip, when it was covered in oceans a long time ago.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

As a Foxling, Barnabas was characterized by his strangely-colored fur. Despite being a Bearskin-Bruiser, his fur contained odd streaks of white fur like that of a Mouseling-Duelist.

Body Features

Pointed ears, small clawed hands, feline teeth, small pig-like legs, long furry tail like a wolf.

Facial Features

Smooth round face, with a nose like a dog.

Identifying Characteristics

His singular eyepatch, which he wore after he lost his eye in some unexplained event. This eyepatch was particularly special as it glowed a bright amber-yellow color, being made from a diamond extracted from a deep mine near the place now known as the Tripoles. This diamond-eyeglass was enchanted, and some say it allowed Barnabas to see into the future.

Physical quirks

He walked with his right leg first instead of his left leg.

Apparel & Accessories

He generally wore clothes made of cotton, silk and lace. He hated leather, as it made him feel itchy. His boots were the only leather items he wore. His special hat was made of woven dried grass.

Specialized Equipment

Apart from his gun, knife and sword, he also possessed a long rifle and slingshot. His hat was also a lethal weapon; made from thatch, it contained six miniature hand-grenades which Barnabus would pluck off and chuck at his enemies at random. Barnabus had a habit of re-stocking his hat after every battle.

Personal history

Born under a large tree on a full-moon night, Barnabas was destined to do great things. At the age of five his father gave him his first sword, which he would carry with him until the grave. After receiving education from the Order, he became a sailor and, five years later, a pirate. He stole a Skiff that was built to travel on water and in air, which he named as "Jolly Rodgers". Barnabas and his ship would be remembered later on in legends and folk-stories.   Barnabas was a shrewd and calculating leader who spurned the use of force, relying instead on his fearsome image to elicit the response that he desired from those whom he robbed. Contrary to popular belief, he commanded his vessels with the consent of their crews and there is no known account of his ever having harmed or murdered those whom he held captive.   A few years after becoming an official pirate of the seas of Yip (before Yip became a desert), he lost his eye to some unknown event. Some say a sky-squid sucked it out, others say he lost it in a fight with a Hellhound. It is said that if you asked him what happened to his eye, he'd tap your shoulder lightly with the back of his sword and tell you to "keep your mouth shut if you want to save your own."   Some of Barnabas's most epic battles were against the Dawnguard before it became an organization of justice and against Tibalt Fiendblood (a previous incarnation of the Red-Wizard). Over the years, Barnabas gained a reputation as the "Robin Hood of the ocean" for his services to the poor and hungry, and for his marvelous exploits against the unjust and cruel. It is said that he gained about 3 billion dollars worth of treasure in his adventures, all of which he hid in a massive vault guarded by two massive Drajj.   A few years before his last battle, Barnabas wrote a detailed anuscript of a document that would later become the Declaration of Spells, made legal 61 years after his demise.   The last battle Barnabas ever fought was when Tibalt Fiendblood attacked Impathatika, his homeland. Barnabas gathered his armies, now about 200 men, and set off in his Skiff to battle them for the last time.   Fiendblood found the pirates anchored on the inner side of a nearby mountain, on the evening of 21 November. He had ascertained their position from Skiffs he had stopped along his journey, but unfamiliar with the local channels and shoals he decided to wait until the following morning to make his attack. He stopped all traffic from entering the lands, preventing any warning of his presence, and posted a lookout on both sloops to ensure that Barnabas could not escape to the skies or sea.   On the other side of the mountain, Barnabas was busy entertaining guests (a tribe of Elves he had rescued from Ogres along the way) and had not set a lookout. It was through saving these Elves that many of his men had perished, so he also had a much-reduced crew. Barnabas had no more than twenty-five people on board, but he gave out to all the vessels that he spoke with that he had forty. Thirteen Foxlings and six Sapiens, plus seven unarmed Elves.   At daybreak, preceded by a small boat taking soundings, Tibalt's two sloops entered the channel. The small craft was quickly spotted by Barnabas and fired at as soon as it was within range of its guns. While the boat made a quick retreat to the side, Barnabas cut the Skiff's anchor cable. His crew hoisted the sails and the ship maneuvered to point starboard guns toward Tibalt's sloops, which were slowly closing the gap. Barnabas moved Ranger (one of his larger canons) to the port side of the ship and the flag of Ka'a' was unfurled on each side. The ship then turned toward the mountain, heading for a narrow tunnel. There was an exchange of small-arms fire following which the ship ran aground on a cliff, and Tibalt anchored and then lightened his ship to pass over the obstacle.   "Damn you for villains, who do you think you are?" said Tibalt.   "You may see by our colors we are no pirates."   Barnabas bid him to send his boat on board, that he might battle him face-to-face one more time; but Tibalt replied:   "I cannot spare my boat, but I will come aboard of you as soon as I can, with my rifle."   Upon this, Barnabas took a glass of liquor and drank to him with these words:   "Damnation seize my soul if I give you quarters, or take any from you."   In answer to which, Tibalt told him that he expected no quarters from him, nor should he give him any.   Barnabas steered his ship, turned the guns on the two ships and fired. The broadside was devastating; in an instant, Tibalt had lost as much as a third of his forces. About 20 on the ship were either wounded or killed and 9 on the other. One of Tibalt's generals was dead and his second and third officers either dead or seriously injured. His sloop was so badly damaged that it played no further role in the attack. In the aftermath of Barnabas's overwhelming attack, the ships had been grounded; the battle was now a race to see who could float their ship first.   The lieutenant had kept many of his men below deck and in anticipation of being boarded told them to prepare for close fighting. Barnabas watched as the gap between the vessels closed, and ordered his men to be ready. The two vessels contacted one another as the the ship's grappling hooks hit their target and several grenades, made from powder and shot-filled bottles and ignited by fuses, broke across the sloop's deck. As the smoke cleared, Barnabas led his men aboard, buoyant at the sight of Tibalt's apparently empty ship, his men firing at the small group formed by the lieutenant and his men at the stern.   The rest of Tibalt's men then burst from the hold, shouting and firing. The plan to surprise Barnabas and his crew worked; the pirates were taken aback at the assault. Barnabas rallied his men and the two groups fought across the deck, which was already slick with blood from those killed or injured by Barnabas's broadside. Tibalt and Barnabas fired their flintlocks at each other, then threw them away. Barnabas drew his cutlass and managed to break Tibalt's sword. Against superior training and a slight advantage in numbers, the pirates were pushed back toward the bow, allowing the sloop's crew to surround Tibalt and Barnabas, who was by then completely isolated. As Tibalt drew back to fire once again, Barnabas moved in to attack him, but was slashed across the neck by one of Tibalt's men. Badly wounded, he was then attacked and killed by several more of Tibalt's crew.   The remaining pirates quickly surrendered. Those left on the ship were captured by the sloop's crew, including one who planned to set fire to the powder room and blow up the ship.   Medics later examined Barnabas's body, noting that it had been shot five times and cut about twenty. They also found several items of correspondence, including a letter to the pirate from his mother and sisters. Barnabas's corpse was thrown into an inlet and his head was suspended from the bowsprit of Tibalt's sloop so that the reward could be collected. In the end, 5000 dollars was paid for his head.   It is said that Barnabas's last words before his death were "If I'm going to the Underrealm, you're coming with me." And it seems that he kept his promise, as Tibalt Fiendblood died two days later from Sandpaper-Flu. It is said that right before Barnabas was killed, he jammed a syringe full of blood contaminated by Sandpaper into Tibalt's left heel, thus finishing his opponent even after death.
