Granny Ozma
Granny Ozma is a halfling harvest witch of indeterminate but ancient age, currently residing on the continent of Rhosgobel, Voidward of The Broken Empire. Earliest records of her existence are in a series of semi-historical poems which are over 400 years old, over a 150 years past a typical halfling lifespan. The boundaries of Ozma's occult territory—a phenomenon that is deeply respected in Rhosgobelish culture—covers about two thirds of the continent's Voidward swamps and bayous. She has a tense but mostly dormant diplomatic relationship with the Coreward third of the island, run by a quarrelsome but capable federation of Clannaðs.
Though Ozma is moody, isolationist and somewhat insane, she takes her duties as steward of her territory seriously, and is largely considered the reason Rhosgobel's brackish, stilted townships have survived—even thrived—in the inhospitable environment. New species of rush, lotus, taro, cattail and other boggy plants have arisen in recent decades that are more nutritious and grow more hardily. Marauding sea monsters that are the bane of many coastal settlements are unheard-of in outer Rhosgobel.
The elder witch's familiar is a Giant monkey-faced bat named Dog. A sizeable creature with the wingspan of an adult albatross, Dog hangs from branches about her homestead, guarding her babbling shell when her soul quests about.Personality
One may usually approach the "Old Bat" (Ozma, not Dog) without being in any danger, though visitors are far more likely to be driven away with a stream of antequated insults, hooting, barking and farting noises than to be granted a seer's hospitality. Her attitude seems to be that inquirants should be happy enough with what she's already doing.
Her empty body can often be seen about her homestead busying itself with simple chores while her consciousness is away on its various occult duties. The body sometimes sings nonsensical, off-key songs, or mutters in a language no one has been able to identify. This behaviour is highly unique: most witches (indeed, most people) are rendered comatose when their bodies and consciousnesses separate.Appearance
Ozma wears modest, unadorned clothing, with the exception of a breath-taking series of wondrous items worn where they're needed: a golden periapt above her scowling eyes, gleaming bangles about her bony wrists and a scarf of the finest silk around her neck. She has had these thus-far-unnamed artefacts as far back as the poems, likely acquired in past adventures still lost to historians.Abilities
Ozma is a staggeringly powerful primal & occult theurge. The upper limits of her abilities are unknown but she is considered by most Gondaran and Lorentian loremongers to be among the most powerful individuals in the Gamma Quadrant. At various times she has conjured massive lightning storms, transformed into drakes, linnorms and taniwha, and closed a tear in the Veil simply by willing it. She has the ability to turn entire forests into a sort of predatory pitcher plant which can immobilize entire armies in sinking peat then digest them.
In one incident, an entire town of a few hundred halflings collectively stopped what they were doing and marched wordlessly to a nearby rise, shortly before a tidal wave obliterated their village, indicating that while Ozma doesn't like her fellow Rhosgobelites much, she doesn't desire them dead either.
