Dragonborn
Summary
Dragonborn emerged on Vrashyn sometime in the last few centuries. Led by a mute silver named Vaikora Droxokindar, they settled in Southeast Laivra and spread out to serve the dragons of the plane, a task they believed was assigned to them by their chief god Droxos at the dawn of creation. Mysterious to other races on Vrashyn, the Dragonborn are known for their seriousness and prowess, both on the battlefield and in intellectual pursuits.Subraces
Dragonborn live relatively short lives, so they have developed defenses against the many dangers of the inhospitable lands in which they live. Fearsome alone and terrifying in groups, Dragonborn can win fights against most humanoids even without resorting to their breath weapon. Dragonborn believe they arose when one of the eggs of their creator god Droxos rolled too far from the nest. Rather than cast out the half-formed spawn, Droxos gave this first Dragonborn eggs and told zir to populate the world with dragons. It was during this spread that each color supposedly arose, each serving and emulating a particular kind of dragon.Appearance
Dragonborn are on the tall side, standing over 6 feet high. Typically maintaining a slim but muscular figure due to their high metabolism, their scales still weigh them down to the tune of 250-300 pounds. Dragonborn can be born with a wide variety of eye colors and are more likely to have mismatched eyes than other races. Some Dragonborn have vestigial wings and tails and the number of scales they have can vary from a fully-exposed front torso to full coverage. Warm-weather Dragonborn don’t wear clothes in their own domain but respect what they would call prudish traditions of other species when traveling abroad, favoring leather clothing that can stand the wear from their scales.Culture
Dragonborn vary in alignment based on their heritage and personal experiences, but most share a conviction to serve dragonkind. Most Dragonborn from The Settlements worship Droxos as their creator, and even those who subscribe to other religious beliefs may honor them. They may also make sacrifices to placate evil draconic gods like Narshaym, a demon who feeds on the souls of dragons. Dragonborn who live outside The Settlements are most likely to subscribe to Hierophy if they are religious. Dragonborn also celebrate important historical events, chief among them Kindatahul, which celebrates their migration from Athan to Southeast Laivra.Livelihood
The more serious pursuits of the Dragonborn include magical study; though they do not host a full university in their territory, they are the most prized and expensive magical tutors in Vrashyn. Martially-inclined Dragonborn often become mercenaries or adventurers, as none but the Kobolds have any interest in invading the arid Dragonborn Settlements. Dragonborn who live in the territory sometimes cohabitate with the dragons they serve, but just as often live in mudbrick homes or repurpose buildings from abandoned or conquered cities. Many like to decorate their houses with stained glass and metalworking and spend their free time reading and playing tabletop games.Upbringing
Because Dragonborn hatch from dragon eggs, they are born sexless. As a result, their culture lacks a concept of gender or family seen among most other ancestries. Dragonborn use ze/zir/zirs pronouns to refer to each other. As children, they live off of the scraps of food left by their dragon mother but are otherwise expected to be self-sufficient once they can walk. Those who survive to the age of ten usually become an apprentice to an adult Dragonborn in a trade of their choice. After five years of apprenticeship, they are considered adults and either take over the post of their master in the nest or strike out on their own. Traditionally, Dragonborn who leave their birth nest often live in small groups with similarly-aged peers if they aren't in the service of a dragon. Dragonborn call this aromantic family unit Olkindar and consider the bonds within it to be as strong as marriage in other cultures.Relations with Others
Dragonborn are friendly with most races, generally saving their wrath for would-be dragonslayers. Though their culture is alien to most others, they are fully capable of appreciating and adopting other cultural practices, including gender and marriage. Though they prefer if other races stay out of their territory, Dragonborn travel often. The most common destinations include the lands of the Lizardfolk, who see them as distant cousins, and the Elves and Gnomes, who admire the Dragonborn for the information and skills they possess. The only communities likely to turn Dragonborn away are Humans and Laivran Dwarves, who hate them because they are the most common victims of dragon attacks. Dragonborn have a mutual rivalry with the Kobolds, who also see themselves as the natural servants of Dragonkind .Racial Features
Ability Score Increase
Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.
Age
Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.
Alignment
Dragonborn tend to extremes, making a conscious choice for one side or the other in the cosmic war between good and evil. These sides are represented by Bahamut and Tiamat, the eldest children of Droxos.
Size
Dragonborn are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall and averaging almost 250 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Breath Weapon
You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
Damage Resistance
You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Though other historians dispute the idea that the Dragonborn language predates Vrashyn itself, they do recognize it as the oldest living language in the world.
