Kobold

Summary

Kobolds live in isolated mountain caves where few people desire to go, but their paranoia nonetheless drives them to set meticulous traps for intruders that rarely come. Kobolds control the land of Snflmz in Southeast Laivra, where they serve an ancient red dragon named Suinfulamus. Kobolds have significantly different social norms than other races, coming across as rude and insensitive to most others. When they do join adventuring parties, they usually only do so because they fear they'll be killed by a jealous rival or another Kobold they wronged. Kobolds in this setting have higher base stat increases to make them more playable.

Appearance

Somewhere between canine and reptilian, Kobolds hide their cunning and ferocity behind their hunched, slinking demeanor. Kobolds come in a wide range of colors but the color of their tough hides is dark and muted. Dragon-like eyes display their kinship with the Dragonborn. The two races are rivals and distant cousins in both legend and fact. Kobolds shun clothing and bathing of any kind, but their odor is usually the last thing on the minds of those unfortunate enough to stumble upon their boobytrapped lairs.

Culture

Despite being the most isolated of the reptilian races, Kobolds culture is more similar to those in the Fertile Lands than that of the Dragonborn and Lizardfolk. Kobolds are divided into castes based on their proximity to the dragon they serve, with a hereditary aristocracy at the top that carries out the orders of the dragon lord. This system leads them to a lawful alignment even when serving a chaotic dragon lord, though they usually take their moral cues from their master. Their lifetime of service leaves little time for leisure, but Kobolds are known lovers of riddles and puzzles.

Relations with Others

Kobolds are strictly isolationist, meeting even friendly attempts to enter their territory with hostility. However, because most people haven't had personal experience with Kobolds, they are looked at as a curiosity rather than a threat by most. Dragonborn are the one exception to this rule. Their shared mythology states that the conflict between Dragonborn and Kobold goes back to the dawn of creation, so it is little wonder that they don't get along.
