The Legend of Braxbane

The origin of the great city of Braxbane.

It is legend that a power struggle between Tyrus, champion of Tyr, and Dekard, champion of Tempus, allowed evil, vile beings to sneak out from deep below the earth and infest the island. After many soldiers and followers of Dekard and Tyrus had been lost to the newly freed demons and wretches of the deep, the two champions of war put their differences aside and established an alliance to defeat the infestation.   This was no easy task, leading to many cities falling to infestation and rampant destruction. Tyrus and Dekard established a protective barrier around the city to keep out any evil, using Tyrus’ great influence over the light and Dekard’s control of fire to shield the citizens from evil. This provoked the wrath of Myrkul and a great black mass emerged from Graveskull Ravine, recalled as Myrtag.   The arrival of this black ooze brought dark skies and rough seas to Mordassus for months until a pulsing green light until a sudden explosion unleashed a legion of the dead, including Myrkul’s commanders: the great dragon, Okyn the Betrayer, and the powerful death knight Brax, the Avatar of Myrkul. While Okyn the Betrayer betrayed Myrkul by fleeing to the mainland and retreating deep into the mountains to create his hoard, Brax stood strong and lead the legions of the dead across Mordrassus.   In the months leading up to the emergence of the legions of Brax, Tyrus and Dekard rallied their armies and allies and started to fight back against all the ilk that the black ooze had pushed from Graveskull Ravine. With their forces rallied, the redemption of Mordassus commenced, allowing Tyrus and Dekard to build up defenses to prevent further destruction to the citizens of the island.   As Brax conquered the lands around the Black Blade Mountain, Tyrus and Dekard forged a pact to remain allies till end times and rallied their armies for one last time. Leading their armies from the front, Tyrus and Dekard lead an aggressive offensive tearing through Brax’s legions. Upon reaching Brax’s camp, Tyrus and Dekard were the only remaining warriors left to face the avatar of Myrkul.   With the power of light and fire, Tyrus and Dekard engaged Brax in a battle for the fate of the realm, clashing fiery sword and radiant war hammer against the shadow emanating, pure black Scythe of the Reaper. Sheer will and skill allowed the champions to slowly whittle away the armor protecting Brax’s brittle body, finally allowing a final blow from the combined power of Tyrus’ light and Dekard’s fire to obliterate Brax’s skeleton. With the avatar defeated, the black mass started to dematerialize, and anything spawned from the dark power faded from the existence or went back to its dead state.   The champions secured the Scythe of the Reaper, breaking it into pieces and enshrining them around the world, keeping the blade to prevent it from falling into the hands of a follower of Myrkul.   Upon return to Mordrassus from their journey to stash the pieces of the Scythe of the Reaper, Tyrus and Dekard looked to the framework of a new temple being constructed. The followers of Tempus and Tyr were arguing over who the temple should be in honor of, and the champions recanted the tale of the destruction of Brax, noting that it was both the strength of Tempus and the tenacity of Tyr that allow the warriors to rid the land of evil. Thus the Temple of Conquerors was founded.   After being granted the status of Avatar from their respective gods, the champions built a large, enchanted catacomb to seal the blade of the Scythe of the Reaper behind the combined powers of Tyr and Tempus.   As word of the deeds of Tyrus and Dekard spread, more and more people flocked to the Temple of the Conqueror’s, establishing a settlement around the temple. In order to maintain the area, Tyrus and Dekard established the Tempyrum Order, an order of justice and might focused on maintaining order in the bustling town. After the settlement was established, the name Braxbane was designated to the city, in honor of the deeds of the great champions.   Since that day, the Tempyrum Order has maintained control over the Isle of Mordrassus with little worry. With a large influx of travelers of all races and creeds, Braxbane has continued to celebrate the success of the lost to time champions every Myrtag.

Historical Basis

After Myrkul was corrupted, he persistently has tried to invade the plane of Volserd. Tempus and Tyr have been tasked with the protection of the mortal plane after their mother, Urth, died sealing the Aether Byways. Their brotherly quarrels distracted them from their task and a dark mass appeared in Graveskull Ravine. Tempus and Tyr's champions rallied an army and defeated Myrkul's army and champion, Brax.   This lead to the creation of the Tempyrum Order, and its eventual growth into the main overseeing governing body on Mordrassus.

Spread

This legend has become common knowledge with some details missing and others greatly embellished as the story is lost to the ages.   It is taught in history classes in every human city throughout the entire plane. Other races, mostly the Dwarves and Elves, write this off as a grand story told to inspire the militaristic views of the Humans, hence the lack of spread throughout the Dwarvish and Elvish cities.
