Origins

Very early in the vnou cultural development, there was a region known as Norjyu. This region was like many others at the time – ruled by powerful Zmutwe. The difference between the Norjyu and the vnou surrounding was their fierce, war-like nature that ran through even the common vnou. They were warriors, pillagers, conquerors. The Lords of Norjyu regularly shared the spoils of their conquests with their tribes, thus turning even their common populace into fighters. Their brutality was known throughout the world – they did not really seek to expand their territory so much as they raided and enslaved the neighboring kingdoms and lands.

The Norjyu flourished for nearly 1000 years until they began to raid territory that brushed up against the expanding empire of the Shwazen. The Shwazen, backed by the power of Shpazh, was able to hold their ground against the Norjyu. It should be noted that the few conflicts between the two lands were often bloody and there was never a clear victor. It was frequently a stalemate over bloody battlefields and bodies.

Around 1100, as the vnou edged into an industrial age, the Norjyu had a power shift amongst their own. One tribe rose above the others in dominance and would become the new name and face of the Norjyu : Oisvas. It would be Oisvas that would participate in the world wide conflict of the Reconstruction, where the brutality of their name soon supplanted the Norjyu name and they became synonymous. After the Reconstruction, Oisvas and those tribes who remained loyal made up a country called Noryj. As the world settled after the Reconstruction, Shpazh would make another push to expand their Empire. This renewed fighting between Shpazh and Oisvas would be reminiscent of the bloody conflicts between the Shwazen and Norjyu – except much of the fighting had to be hidden from the public eye.

It would take almost 300 years before the conflict would settle. Oisvas, and former Noryj, would keep their land under the Protectorate of the Shwazen Empire – now called Sakila. This allowed Oisvas to keep a semblance of their independence and Shpazh to save face on a global scale.

Daemons

Stories of the Norjyu ferocity were, and still are, legendary. Zmutwe of that time elevated themselves above the mortal and ruled as though divine, with a viciousness unmatched by any other. Horror stories of monsters in the dark, of daemons or demons that consume the soul of a vnou, are born out of the tales of the Norjyu. Even Shpazh will reluctantly admit that, of all the families, they would least like to fight Oisvas. The daemon of Oisvas weaponized their Shra in ways the others simply couldn’t replicate – bordering on what many would later call insanity.

Reluctant Admiration

The days of the week and names of the months have been named after various Oisvas and Norjyu daemons. Elevated vnou whose presence left a scar across the collective history, whose myths and horror stories are as varied as their art depictions. Vnou collectively adopted these names into the calendar as a way to appease the Oisvas and bring an end to their fighting – it was one of the biggest ego blows to Shpazh who had, up until that point, claimed dominion over the calendar and time.

Author's Notes

Vnou is supposed to be an echo, or AU, of earth. A lot of these names are lifted from both roman and norse mythology, and history, and then butchered to suit this setting. The idea is that some of those myths were actually powerful vnou while others are just myths or conflated stories of events that might have happened.

The nature of this article felt surprising, with all the aristocratic-ness of the vnou as a whole. But of course, it fits so perfectly into the world you've created! I feel like this could have a neat synergy with the wolfies.

Trying to work in some more of the brutal nature of them - as well as making a place for Oisvas. ^^ Glad it still seems to fit.

What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark?
