After the devestation caused by the Acuran disease across the land. Rulers of kingdoms, regions and cities of Violem came together to make the travel to other realms illegal. Something that would punishable by death if caught. This led to many stranded in other realms unable to return back to Violem and more traditional means of travel like sailing and waystones becoming popular means of long distance transport.
Lead Up:
The banning of portal and teleportation magic came about towards the end of the eploration era. When a disease spawning from another realm began infecting the minds of Acuran, the original and most powerful magic users. The disease caused their minds to corrode, turning logical thoughts into insane actions. This unpredictable and destructive behaviour resorted in many outbursts throughout Violem. Cities destroyed and hundreds killed.
Royal families, city councils and other leading figures saw the chaos that was being caused by the Acuran and grw concerned for the safety of all. With discussions often leading to the amount of other worldly threats that could enter the realm of magic and decimate them all. So, after dealing with the disease titled Acuran Madness, the leaders of Violem all signed an agreement to abolish travel to other realms.
Portal Protocol:
The agreement that was signed by more than one hundred mayors, chieftains and royal family members outlined how travel to other realms would be regulated. Giving a thirty day grace period for news to spread across the realms and allow anyone to return to their home worlds. After that grace period, anything that would entered Violem via portal magic would be forced to one year imprisonment to allow law enforcements assess the danger. This tight window to return to Violem saw many sorcerers and minaurans stranded in other realms, never to see their homes ever again.
To track portal magic being used, large monoliths were constructed in every major city with proximity runes tuned to listen for portal spells that were common at the time. The spells used on the monolith could also detect when a portal was cast inside the area of affect, which would result in the caster being cursed with a mark that branded them an outlaw.
The agreement also saw regulation of known waystones, with round the clock supervision and only allowing use of these natural portal devices with the consent of governments. Exports between cities and continents tripled in price which was met with disagreement from the public.
Another disagreement with the new ban came from the realm rangers, a guild dedicated to researching and exploring other realms. The group protested against the new laws leading to a violent war between rangers and law enforcements. Ultimately the realm rangers were disbanded, their headquarters and research was burnt to the ground and any who opposed the new rules were hunted and killed.
Present Day:
Over time the knowledge of portals, realm travel and teleportation was lost to the general public. With many choosing to ignore or refuse to talk about the subject to avoid breaking the law. Bringing it up in conversation is seen as taboo. Those who do speak about it talk about the amount of information lost to time, research of the realm rangers destroyed and share a common disapproval of the portal ban.
