Gatekeeper Character in Villain Academy | World Anvil

Gatekeeper

(a.k.a. Eclipse)

Gatekeeper is the Top Hero of the State of Illinois that reached nation-wide fame due to being a rare case of truly powerful long-range teleportation indviduality holder. A fact that makes her absolutely crucial for a fast response to various disasters or villain attacks, not just in Illinois but actually nationwide. This made her a State Hero despite Gatekeeper somewhat lagging behind in terms of pure combat skills.   This is, however, a ruse. Gatekeeper is much more skillful combatant, in fact equal to the best out there. However, she keeps most of her combat skills hidden - and only uses them whe she acts as Eclipse, the elusive leader of the Shield of Mankind and one of the most dangerous supervillains in the country.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Reasonably feminine build, although slightly more lithe than curvaceous. Well-trained, with visible muscles. Can be surprisingly agile - is practically speaking a trained gymnast and knows how to apply that on the battlefield when needed.

Special abilities

Her individuality is called Surface Warp. She is capable of conjuring and controlling flat surfaces with properties of either a material in her vicinity or an area in space (which makes them into a two-way teleportation gates). She uses it in two different ways as Gatekeeper and Eclipse, though, a fact that's majorly responsible for the connection still eluding people out there.   Eclipse uses it to create circular, black with yellow edge, platforms that she can use for offensive and defensive purposes. Her surface's flat side are an equivalent of fifteen centimeters of any sufficiently thick and large material in her vicinity, meaning that when engaged near a concrete building, she can shield herself with fifteen centimeters of concrete at will. Despite that, her surfaces are monomolecular, meaning that the edge of said circles are capable of cutting through literally everything.   In exchange, she doesn't use the 'teleportation' element of her individuality - at least unless she is certain that no one's looking and even then she makes her warpgates look widely similar to what Gatekeeper is using.   Gatekeeper, in the meantime, is creating rectangular gates actually resembling nearby doors (that she apparently 'needs' to use her individuality). She can also create short-distance warpgates of rather uneven shapes that she uses when engaged on closer distance to redirect enemies or attacks elsewhere, being apparently 'limited in the range of her teleportation' without time and doors to actually use.

Apparel & Accessories

As Eclipse, she is wearing a tight black bodysuit with some light body armor on top of it - the only exceptions are her head, where she is instead wearing a smooth, black facemask. It's actually from a very flexible, nano-machine based material that means that it literally cannot fall off, being attached to her face without her really feeling it. There are also minuscule cameras located right in front of her eyes, their feed translated directly into her brain through a passive cerebral implant that she inherited from her time as a soldier.   As Gatekeeper she is wearing spandex uniform, white in colour, with the seal of the state of Illinois on her chest. Together with it are a white domino mask and high boots (on low heels). As a background supporter, she consciously went for a less 'practical' look to appear less threatening and make people suspect connections between her and Eclipse even less.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

It's hard to say which identity was born first, that of Gatekeeper or of Eclipse. What is known is that she had a military background, being a pilot of space shuttle for the United States' Space Force before her individuality manifested. Like in many similar cases, she decided to switch into heroics, especially as her superpower turned out to be something intensely valuable and powerful. Much more than her piloting skills.   Gatekeeper being there - even if mostly in the background - has resulted in a steady growth of popularity that she wasn't fightng against very much. Eventually, she was elected as the new Top Hero of the State of Illinois following the retirement of her predecessor due to injuries. She remains a Top Hero ever since, balancing on a tightrope between that and her other career.   Her military background (one that she shares with a number of other high profile SoM members) leads to recurrent speculations of Eclipse (and through her, Shield of Mankind as a whole) actually working for the US Government as a form of additional contingency plan against threats from within superhero ranks. That would indicate that her status as a supervillain was a set-up the whole time, and Eclipse remains loyal to the US Government.   There is no conclusive evidence for that. However, with SoM targetting heroes that are seen as 'dangerous' to the unpowered majority due to their views and actions, there might be some merit to that theory (or it's simply an ideological coincidence).

Intellectual Characteristics

Intelligent enough to be a space shuttle pilot, and only got better ever since. High intelligence, wealth of knowledge and combat experience (on both sides), and a good ability to act since she DID manage to fool a lot of people on both sides about herself. She isn't a true mastermind, but she at the very top of tactical and strategic skills available to 'normal' people.

Morality & Philosophy

Appears to be a person really 'moved' by the cases of abusing hero badges to commit crimes or otherwise force the 'normals' to do something for you, seeing the heroes explicitly as public servants. She appears to largely loathe the whole showbusiness/celebrity thing that the heroes have going, doing absolutely lowest amount of public exposure that she can and donating all income from merchandise to charities.   As a result, is seen by the other superheroes as a bit of an oddball.   Is reasonably remorseless, a fact clearly seen in the act of ordering deaths of numerous heroes that failed to live up to her standard as Eclipse.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Strengths
As an Eclipse, she is an extremely dangerous combatant on a close-to-mid range, that's also highly versatile. She can shield her allies, she can separate her enemies from each other with sufficiently large surfaces (crowd control), she can severs physically-existing combatants in half.   As Gatekeeper she might be weaker in combat but is instead a long-distance warpgate bearer, making her INVALUABLE for both fast response to disasters and medevac.

Weaknesses
Like most other superheroes and supervillains, she is vulnerable to ambushes when doesn't have her individuality on. As Gatekeeper she is also weak in close combat, especially as she has to consciously limit herself to NOT accidentally use the wrong skillset. As a result, she sticks to the background in most operations.   And as Eclipse, she is limited to the surfaces available to her in the area - in a forest she'll only be able to use wood and soil, making her several times weaker.
