Olziir

Olziir is, arguably, one of the most important cities found in Devkarth save for Levia, the capital. Olziir is the heart of all Devkarti trade, and serves as an important place to export the exotic goods carried by the Devkarti. Slaves are also brought in from the Smiles, and serve as a valuable part to the trading network in Olziir.

Demographics

It would be easy to refer to Olziir as a 'melting pot'; for it is the primary harbor used to transport outsiders into Devkarth, be they slaves, merchants, or simply new arrivals wishing to start a new life.   Most of Olziir consists of native Devkarti, as expected, though most of the Devkarti living in Olziir are either nobles or people with higher standing than average. Slaves or peasants are relegated into the slums.

Government

Olziir is directly controlled by the Devkarti capital, with an established Ra serving as the controller of the city. Currently, Olziir is ruled by Dalar Ra-Vass.   Merchant Taxes: 'Commerce' or 'Merchant Tax' is an important practice of Olziir. Those wishing to trade within the walls of Olziir must first pay a small fee before being allowed to set their shop up within the city. Those selling products in Olziir are to tax 4% of their product, rounded up. The city guard is then sent to collect any funds made through the market square, before being taken to Olziir's treasury.   Slave Trade: Slaves are kept within the market for any bidders that may wish to pay for them. They are kept in a special pen until sunset, where merchants or traders may purchase them at any point through bidding with the owner. The Ra then either sends guards or personally leaves to the market so that she may evaluate the slaves for anyone that may be deemed suitable enough to work in Olziir. Those who are seen as suitable enough are kept or purchased by her.

Defences

Its location is very convenient; Olziir is sandwiched between two mountains, while the rest of Devkarth is found behind it. Olziir can be summed up in three layers; the first layer consists of small settlements found on the outskirts of the city, where slaves, the poor, or less fortunate are given homes to live in. There are two more walls placed to separate the rest of the city from the common folk. The first wall divides the slums from the rest of the city, while the largest wall encapsulates town square; the heart of Olziir.

Industry & Trade

Coconuts: From the local palm forests, Coconuts are harvested and commonly traded.   Dried Fish: Fish are hung from drying racks across Olziir; the city slums are notorious for the stench that comes from this, but it has become a common export.   Slaves: Easily the most important part of Olziir's economy; the slave trade is very strong in Olziir.

Assets

Brothels: Although many cities of Devkarth have brothels, the Olziir brothel is often seen as the most important due to the city being the primary arriving point used by tourists and pirates. There are two brothels in Olziir; both of which owned by the Ra's son. Funds all go towards the city.   Markets: The most important part of Olziir is the marketplace; one could say that the markets are the 'heart' of the city itself. The markets are a big reason why people frequent the city, especially slavers, smugglers, and other manner of unsavory folk willing to make a high profit.

Architecture

Olziir has thick walls crafted from carved limestone, set in place by either paid laborers from stone masons or slaves. Rooftops are flat and typically used as drying space for clothing. The buildings are square in shape with a single front door, while windows are usually small.

Geography

Olziir can be found at the edge of a gulf, found along a vast beach covered with a thick palm forest. At the sides of this forest are two mountain chains with several miles of distance from the actual city.

Natural Resources

Palm Forest: The Palm forests surrounding Olziir are what initially lead to its construction, namely due to the large quantities of coconuts that can still be found. Coconut farms are found throughout the outskirts, and are a popular fruit sold by the city markets.   Ocean Fish: As a port city, Olziir employs the use of fishing boats found throughout the city.   Quarried Stone: Olziir just so happens to be situated in between two coastal mountains, which are perfect for stone quarries.
