Hastos

Grand Meister Hastos Neryll (a.k.a. The Blind Sage)

I will gladly rot in this cell if it means keeping him away from my people. --Hastos' famous last words, before his body was found dead in the cell just a day later.
Hastos was born during a period of time where the Elves were still a young race. An era where their people had still remained relatively young. Magic has always been an important part of Elven culture, and due to all magic requiring an exceptional amount of time to effectively practice and perfect, they later grew obsessed with the idea of immortality. During this time, the Elves had desperately began to seek methods of prolonging their life through any means necessary. Hastos was born right in the middle of this time period, and in time, became the Archmage of the Elven people. It was Hastos who was entrusted with providing rules and regulation of magic, as well as providing the research necessary to help prolong their life.   Though exact tales remain inconclusive, it's said that a great snake assaulted the Elven village. This serpent, when split open, contained a magical blood that prolonged the lives of every soldier that found themselves sullied by it. When he later studied it, Hastos reportedly discovered the blood to bestow immortality. How he acquired more blood samples remains a mystery, but what he found had effectively changed the lives of the Elven people. The Fae had found this to be an abomination against nature. Immortality was not something any mortal should claim, it simply takes away what they are, and thus began the two pseudo-castes of Elves. Those that supported immortality, and those that wished it to be denied. Despite having the ability to quite literally inject immortality into someone's veins, and being an immortal himself, Hastos split from his faction and joined the side that wished immortality to be shunned.   Alas, madness claimed him. When his people were at a celebration, his voice grew dark. Serpentine webs of darkened veins bulged and weaved beneath his flesh, symptoms often compared to those suffering The Blood Curse today. He announced the folly of those denying life, within seconds, caused a massacre that lead to hundreds of Elven lives lost.   This madness however, firmly showed the corruption that comes with immortality. As with many things in Elven tradition, they severed and broke off all methods of reproducing that foul blood, leaving them without the secrets of immortality forever. Perhaps Hastos would be happy to see that his people had eschewed immortality, even if it lead to the martyrdom of countless lives.

Mental characteristics

Education

During his time, Hastos possessed one of the greatest minds of the Elven people. His unique spells have forever left a lasting impression upon the world, with countless techniques named after him alone. Hastos' magic is particularly known for using ones own body as a weapon; to turn one's blood to venom, or their flesh to fire. Though Hastos has been long dead, he is still forever commemorated by the Elves as one of the greatest Magi in history, even in the face of the atrocity he committed.

Employment

Hastos served as the minister of all magic for the Elven empire. As such, it was him who controlled how magic should be applied, what spells are to be outlawed, and the important regulations that held particularly ambitious wizards from abusing their power. Ironically, it was Hastos himself that later turned on his own people, killing hundreds of his own people before he was subdued and locked within his cell.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Investitures: The 'Investitures' are a series of different spells invented by Hastos, designed to change one's body into a living weapon. Flames pour from wounds, or poisonous clouds may form from spilled blood. These powerful spells have become famous among the Elven people, as they're frequently used by soldiers on the frontlines due to their close ranged nature.   Immortality: Reportedly, Hastos discovered how to accomplish immortality. Ironically, this secret remains hidden in his grave. Many Elves like to consider Hastos more of a myth than true history. A lesson to not give in to one's desire for immortality.

Mental Trauma

Gods, I hear them. I hear the voices. Their mouths open to speak, their lips opening only to bite upon my very veins! MADNESS, Madness in my blood!
After the discovery of immortality, Hastos was frequently reported as mentally unsound. He often spoke to himself and frequently believed that there was another person he was speaking to. He would also shift his tone of voice at random, growing in hostility when provoked.
You deny immortality? Here, then. You wish not to live, so I grant you a gift. Death.
Due to the timing of his change in personality, many believe that immortality had somehow maddened Hastos into a deranged lunatic. Very few understand why or how he went through such a mood swing, but his breakdown lead to the murder of countless people.
