Crolf Species in Vesax | World Anvil

Crolf

Within the forests and plains of Bolder are a number of large megafaunas, creatures like Mammoths, Giant Bison, and some colossus Elk, despite this, there are no large predators to counter this number of prey. Rather than a single large predator the lands of Bolder are covered in megapacks of creatures called Crolfs.
These creatures are often compared to gryphons or hippogriffs as they share the partial body parts of multiple creatures, but unlike their counterparts, Crolf are rarely seen alone, and instead travel in megapacks that can be in the hundreds to millions in some rare cases.
While the Crolf megapacks are restricted to bolder for its megafauna, there have been some small packs, one to five hundred, have been seen in the Ennesland forests. If found, these packs have to be exterminated as they can destroy entire ecosystems to feed the pack.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Crolf have the rear body of a wolf, encompassing the spine and back legs and a tail that has both hair and feathers, the front of the body is reminiscent of an oversized crow with the two front legs being similar to a crows leg and a head like a crow. The Crolf also has a pair of large wings that, while unable to fly, these wings allow the creature to make massive jumps to take down much larger prey.

Genetics and Reproduction

Crolf lay eggs and tend to make caves or large caverns into massive nesting grounds.

Growth Rate & Stages

Crolf age quickly, reaching breeding age only three months after hatching.

Ecology and Habitats

Crolf prefer open plains or deep forests but require large amounts of prey animals.

Additional Information

Domestication

While rare and extremely difficult, there have been cases of Crolf being tamed and domesticated in small numbers. Curiously, in only two generations, tamed Crolf will begin to undergo changes reflecting their domestication. These tamed Crolf will have white streaks occur across their feathers and fur in a pattern similar to that of a Magpie, they also tend to grow much larger, reaching up to eight feet in length.
