Lyllax, Empress of the Cobalt Sea

Legends speak of a dark society deep in the depths of the Cobalt Sea. A nation of powerful and amphibious merfolk and fish people thriving in a society that contempt those on the surface. Ruling this society is a terrible monstrosity... A horror so feared and avoided, the mere mention of it to sailors will cause them to shudder.   This monster occasionally attacks sailors, from small trading vessels to massive warships, devours the crew, and drags any survivors down to the bottom of the sea, turning them into her slaves. She and her people plot the destruction and subjugation of the people on the surface. With the breakout of war between Alvaria and the Empire, this monster has been fed well, as much of the battle takes place in her domain, the sea between the island of Alvaria and the Veridian Continent. This monster still hungers for flesh and dominion. Lyllax, Horror of the Cobalt Sea...   -Excerpt from "Top 10 Scary Ocean things that can and will Kill You!"

Personal history

The bastard child between the deities of the sea and of storms, Lyllax was a treacherous weapon of war raised to fight in a terrible conflict ages ago. Though times have changed and the gods no longer walk the earth, Lyllax has remained on the inner planes, taking residence in the plane of Water. Perhaps it was intentional or a coincidence, Lyllax passed through a portal to the Material Plane, and has since made it her home.   Lyllax's supreme intelligence allowed her to build a cult following that spanned much of the continent. Her servants worshiped and offered sacrifices to please her often insatiable desires. Her lust for power and strength grew until she desired to control all that the water touched. The "Cult of the Kraken" that spawned from her began to grow to dangerous levels of power, before it was ultimately defeated and destroyed by the nations of the time. Worship of Lyllax was forbidden, and soon she became reduced to nothing but a myth.   Hundreds of years later, the myth of Lyllax is still strong among sailors, some of whom realize that she is more than just a myth. Still with the desperate desire of domination in her head, Lyllax targeted the Triton protectorate in the lost city of Leviatha. The Tritons valiantly battled Lyllax and were near victory, until a wizard deserted from the Tritons and joined forces with Lyllax, and obliterated them with powerful magic. Lyllax took control and enslaved the Tritons and turned the wildlife surrounding the city into an army to prepare for her conquest of the surface world.   She reined and was nearing completion of her goal, when a brave team of heroes from the continent of Veridia, accompanied by a Triton who managed to escape Lyllax's grasp, traveled to Leviatha to do battle with the Empress. They fought bravely, and managed to subdue the traitor wizard and slay Lyllax, the killing blow dealt by an anonymous fighter, and thus freeing the protectorate and saving the world.   Though Lyllax is dead, her influence on the world still remains. Certain individuals have recently seen visions of Lyllax, pressuring them to find certain artifacts and to destroy her enemies. Rumors that the Kraken cult have returned and are plotting to resurrect the Titan are spread across Veridia and the Luserial Archipelago. It is also believed that Lyllax may have produced offspring, though sailors dare not imagine what horrific creatures could have spawned from the Empress.

It is believed that Lyllax produced a number of offspring. The exact number is unknown, but all evidence points to Lyllax being a terrible mother, abusing her children and leaving them to fend for themselves. Very few of her children share the same physical features; some are closer in form to their mother, while others deviate significantly, even appearing and functioning as humanoids. The following list compiles information about the creatures that are known to be Lyllax's offspring.   Sarlax, Dread Spawn - Sarlax is a feared creature known to lure sailors and divers into its lair to toy with them and then slaughter them. It closely resembles its mother, with the upper half of its body resembling a human female, and the lower half of a squid-like creature. It is believed that Sarlax draws creatures to its lair because it is lonely and mad after having slain its sibling.   Grotha, Storm Hydra - Resembling its mother, Grotha's appearance is that of an evil looking female, but instead of tentacles, its appendages are all serpent-like heads that lash out at its will. Sailors who have encountered this creature reported that removing these heads did not kill the monster, but instead two heads grew back in its place.   Blozex - This name was given to an unusually large and terrifying angler fish that eats people and apparently possesses some sentience.   Loralurk - One of Lyllax's youngest and most humanoid looking spawn, Loralurk barely resembles her mother, appearing as a fish-like humanoid with the an angler fish lure protruding from her head. Instead, she received her mother's magical powers and intellect. Loralurk rejected her mother's evil ways and found herself imprisoned inside her father, who happens to be a continent sized eel residing in the Shadowfell.   Sygrid - The only evidence of this creature comes from the deranged survivors who encountered Sarlax, who claim the creature mentioned this name on multiple occasions as its "sister."
