Majoran Multitool

"It is said that you can tell a lot about a Majoran by their Multitool. I don't know if that's true, or really what it means, but I had an uncle who married a Majoran and he held to that sentiment. He and his fellow Majorans would spend hours discussing their tools. Unfortunately, that's not a euphemism.   I'll be honest, these conversations often had me tuning out very quickly, but one thing that is clear; all Majorans carry their Multitool everywhere. Everywhere."

The Majoran Multitool does what it says on the tin. It is a combination tool which by design has multiple functions and is designed to be carried around in a pocket, purse or pouch and used several times a week if not daily. There are no standard functionality, but some are more common than others.   Below is a list of possible functionality, grouped by commonality. It is worth noting that this is functionality and not necessarily features, as two Multitools may have the same functionality but achieve it in very different ways. As a simple example, one tool may have a laser designed for cutting through materials, while another might use a blade, and another may have an iceray, depending on the preference of the user.

Common

  • Creating Marks
  • Cutting
  • Measuring
  • Pliers
  • Recording Audio
  • Screwdriver
  • Tweezing

Uncommon

  • Magnifying
  • Recording Data
  • Soldering
  • Transmitting Data
  • Transmitting Sound

Rare

  • Calculations
  • Conversions
  • Recording Spacial Dimensions
  • Scanning and providing data on an object
  • Scanning and providing data on organic matter

Variations

Majorans are renowned for being resourceful, and this extends to not only how they use their Multitool but to the make up of the tool itself. There are centres around the P'Ache Solar System which offer the ability to upgrade or make additions to a Multitool, but most Majorans take pride in making their own.   This image is an example of a tool modified by its owner.

Manufacturing process

There is no such thing as a standard Multitool. Every year, a new version is released with different additions and optimisations.   Manufacturing itself takes place on the moon of P'Ache Major, rather than one of the Factory Planets and unlike the majority of production within the P'Ache Solar System is overseen by the Majoran representative within P'Ache Command, rather than by Peacekeeper Efficiency. This is due to the relative perceived value of the tool to the different groups.
As Majorans place a higher importance on it, they are responsible for its manufacture and production. That does not mean that Peacekeeper Efficiency doesn't have some input, and often features which are developed by them for other purposes, soon find a way of becoming part of the next version of the Multitool or offered as an add-on.
"I wouldn't advise asking a Majoran about their Multitool. Each one is unique and customised and you can easily lose a day by asking about it."

History

The Multitool predates the name Majoran and has long been a fundamental part of Majoran society. This image is thought to be one of the earliest examples of the Multitool, being something that could be used to cut and mark and had something like pliers built into the handle.   The tool certainly predates recorded history and has always been seen as an indication of the society which made it. For example, when the Primians landed on P'Ache Major, the recording element was added shortly after,
which can be seen as a sign of the advanced technology they brought with them.

The discovery of applications of Larite also had a major impact on the Multitool, providing the Majorans with an energy source which was both small enough and lasted long enough to make many additional electronic features feasible.

Significance

The Multitool plays a major part in Majoran customs. A child is gifted either a Multitool or a kit to build their own as part of their coming of age celebrations (see Celebrations and Feast Days Across The Territories).   They are the thing every Majoran holds close to them, both physically and metaphorically. For each person, the tool carries not only a level of social status,
surrounding what features have been paid for or better yet what features have been built and adapted by the owner, but also a sense of comfort and heritage. There is a reason the following common phrase is used to refer to someone feeling lost:
Like a Majoran without their Multitool

This makes me think about what kind of things I would want on a multitool. It's a really interesting cultural thing.   Do Majorans ever replace their multitool with a newer model, or do they keep their first for life?

That is such a good question. They wouldn't replace it, but they might get amendments and have alterations done. So, it may not have any of the same parts it started with but it would never be directly replaced. It would be like what they say about wooden boats, that even when all the pieces are replaced the boat is still the same boat.

That makes sense to me. I like that. :D

Thanks for asking the question! I'll find a way of adding that information into the article. :D
