Rhimestone
On the ice shores of the Inner Sea of Eltar lies a small but prosperous village named Rhimestone.
Demographics
Government
Rhimestone is ruled by a Governor, who dictates all laws and handles all legal proceedings and disputes within the village limits.
There is one singular law enforcer, who is authorized to use any and all force necessary to keep the peace within the village limits.
Defences
Large wooden walls with watchtowers surround the village, providing a simple defense from the terrors of the outside world.
Rhimestone also has a small militia who man the watchtowers and guard the entry gates to the village proper, made up of randomly selected members of the village who change out every month.
They also hold several ships at their docks as a last line of escape should the village come under true attack. All who can evacuate to the ships and then drift out into the Inner Sea, protected from on land attack until they can sail back and begin to rebuild if necessary.
Industry & Trade
Rhimestone's lifeblood is the trade of wood and furs. Even with the collapse of The Eltaran Empire in the northern half of the continent, wood for building and heat is still in high demand throughout its reach. Exotic furs from the beasts that roam the ice fields in the southern half are a much sought after luxury item, and their sale does much to pay for the food and rink the town imports form the north.
Infrastructure
Rhimestone has a prosperous shipyard, with which they trade goods with The Eltaran Empire to the north. Several woodcutters camps are scattered in the forests that surround the village, providing fuel for the life giving fires they need to survive in the cold, as well as raw timber and logs they require for trade.
While most crops take more time to raise in the cold environment of the continents lower half, a small farmstead outside the village has managed to find a strain of wheat hardy enough to stand up to the cold, and they produce all of the non imported flower and raw grain for the village. While they do not produce enough to keep the village fully sustained on grains, they are ever expanding.
The village also hosts a small collection of butchers, metal smiths, bakers, and leather workers.
History
When the first human settlers arrived in the frozen tundra of the southern portion of the continent, they were met with hard winters, rough living, and dangerous roving barbarian tribes. Rhimestone was founded as an outpost to be used as a shipping port for the Empire, allowing for goods and people to move back and forth over the Inner Sea. After the collapse of the empire, and due to the harshness of the cold climates, many of the smaller towns and villages of the lower portion of the continent were either abandoned or destroyed, leaving Rhimestone as the last frontier point for the people of Eltar.
Following the Mage Exodus and the increasing martial law that swept through the collapsing empire to the north, Rhimestone soon became a haven for those who were considered impure, outlawed, or simply those running for their lives. Today, The Eltaran Empire does not fully acknowledge the existence of the village itself, despite continuing to use it as a trading hub with those who have fled its control.
Architecture
Nearly every building in the town is made of wood, mostly cabin style in nature. The few exceptions are the warehouses by the docks, and the large mausoleum to the north of the village.
