Bloodberry

Why do I need to drink human blood, or animal blood? Give me just some bloodberry juice.
— Count Dadrick Ventila

Why Vampires eat/drink them:

It is a safe way to stay alive. From the age of 18 the body of a Vampire rejects normal food, and needs blood to survive. But drinking from humans is dangerous, read more about that in the Peace agreement.

Origin:

The bloodberry bushes were blueberry bushes, but after the First war the roots of the bushes were taking up the blood that was draining into the ground. The structure of the plant changed so much that it now looks dead.

Bloodberry bushes:

The plant has very dark green leaves and vines. The blossoms are blood-red, and the berry are the same color.

Where the plant grows:

The plants are now growing in closed environments, like greenhouses. There are still some wild plants, but those are rare because they drain the blood out of the ground.

What makes the bloodberry special:

The bloodberry has a combination of vitamin C and iron.

How to prepare they berries:

  • You cut the berries in half and then heat them until they're slightly boiled.
  • Pour the juices through a fine sieve.
  • Press the rest of the berry stew through the sieve, with a spoon.
  • Heat the juice again until it's boiled and then pour it into a jar.
  • Let it cool off and close the jar. Then put it in a cool dark place until you need to prepare it.
— Chef from the canteen miss Valé

The berries taste just like human blood.

It is used in sauces, drinks, syrups.

Interesting concept! I still have a few questions though. How does is it actually grown in the greenhouses? Does it need blood to grow there since it's needed for the wild plants?
