Create Forgery
Replaces Quick Fake
Create a fake copy of an existing or fictional piece of writing. When making a forgery, you expend the appropriate amount of time and resources for the forgery, and then roll a Forgery Kit check. The result of the check is the Quality DC of the forgery, which is the DC that any character inspecting the forgery must beat to determine that the creation is a fake. If you are forging writing in a language your don't know, the Quality DC of the forgery takes a -5 penalty. The following are guidelines for various complexities of forgery.
Guidelines for forgeries:
- Simple Forgery (1 hour): An emblem or crest, a simple one page document, a perfectly recreated signature.
- Moderate Forgery (8 hours): A simple several page document, or highly detailed single page document. A simple set of identity papers.
- Complex Forgery (24 hours or more): A complex multi-paged technical document, a detailed set of identification papers.
Research: Before you create a forgery, you may wish to do some research to increase the efficacy of the result. Doing so increases the Quality DC of the resultant forgery by +5. To do so, you must obtain access to a guideline, such as studying the persons handwriting style from an existing document, or reading legal documents similar to the one you're trying to forge. If a characters background is appropriate, granting them personal experience with the subject of forgery, perhaps no research is required to gain the benefits of the feature.
Cross-Contamination
When combining Forgery Kit proficiency with other tool proficiencies, you gain the ability to fake more than just written documents. Combined with proficiency in
Painter's Supplies, and you can make fake pieces of art, mimicking a famous artists style to try and drive the price up of your piece. Combined with
Alchemist's Supplies you can create fake, or watered down potions, and make them appear real even against a trained eye, allowing you to sell them at full price with low production cost. Combined with
Calligrapher's Supplies you could craft a spell scroll that is actually more of a self-detonating bomb when used, and successfully hide the fact. The possible combinations and uses are extensive, and can be discussed by consulting the DM.
