The Ciprosian Regnum
The Ciprosian Regnum is a theocratic monarchy, ruled in tandem by the Rex of Agrinon and the Exarch of the Pantheon of the Five, based in Hagios. It is the largest state in Colossia, controlling nearly the entire Ciprosian Sea, as well as most territories south of the Nicilian Step, west of the Mekonite Desert, and north of the Encroaching Cold. The polity was formed in 837YD, shortly after Rex Norbanus IV of Agrinon was elected High Despot of Hagios following the death of Nillir Crowwalker.
Structure
The Ciprosian Regnum has two concurrent rulers at any given time. The monarch, referred to as the High Rex is the simultaneous Rex of Agrinon and High Despot of Hagios, and shares power with the Exarch of the Five, based in Hagios. The High Rex acts as the executive in most matters, though can be vetoed by the Exarch, and is elected by members of the Senate. The former Senate of Agrinon, now Senate of the Ciprosian, serves as the legislative body of the Regnum, and its members are elected by its citizens. The Exarch is chosen by the religious leadership of Hagios, the five Hierarchs, from among themselves.
Culture
The Ciprosian Regnum has a diverse culture, though all of its member cities and territories share many common cultural traits, and most of its population follow the Pantheon of the Five. Those in the western Ciprosian tend to be somewhat collectivist and militaristic, while eastern Ciprosians are known for their piety and art. Those in the eastern republics near Lotium are generally individualist, and interested in self-sufficiency and wealth, though to a lesser degree than their Bakerian cousins.
History
Following the death of High Despot Nillir Crowalker on the 24th of Fining, 836, the nobility and religious leadership of Hagios elected Rex Norbanus IV, ruler of the Regnum of Agrinon, as their new High Despot. The two cities were united in a personal union, which was quickly reformed into a new state, the Ciprosian Regnum, on the 2nd of Sesonem, 837. This sparked a revolt in Hagios by some of the nobility and commoners, though it was quickly suppressed, and many of its lower-ranking members pardoned by Fulsweith, the Hierarch Under Teokt.
The formation of this new state caused significant tension among the Regnum's neighbours, particularly the Kingdom of Oshagm, and the Khaganate of Nicilia. The next two years saw a series of diplomatic conferences and political maneuvers, during which Nicilia and several other states joined the Oshagm-led Colossian Union. On the 9th of Nimuth, 839, the dominant powers of the continent met for a conference in Colosse, during which terms were decided to end the crisis. Most of the former territories of the Colossean Imperium would be annexed by the Ciprosian Regnum, but would contain no major fortifications, and the Colossean Straits would remain neutral, while the Ciprosian Regnum would officially join the Colossian Union. The treaty was signed on the 26th in Agrinon by delegates from all attending states, and its tenets have been honoured to the present day.
The Ciprosian Regnum expanded peacefully in the years following its formation, with many of the former Akraian League members eagerly joining, seeing it as the best compromise between the freedom of independence, and the stability of the old Colossean Imperium. Several minor cities to the east of the Ciprosian have also joined the Regnum, and there are ongoing attempts to have the current High Rex, Aurelius, elected to the throne of Colosse, which would result in the Regnum's total domination of the Ciprosian Sea.
Foreign Relations
The Ciprosian Regnum is a member of the Colossian Union, a political and economic union first proposed by King Jaq I of Oshagm, and including most states in Colossia. The Regnum is on good terms with most of its neighbours, and has extensive trade relations with the United States of Bakeria, particularly through the Ciprosian Colonies in Edrothia.
