Political parties

It's crooked here, too

Like in most places, politics in United Britannia and Hibernia is a large part of everyone's lives. Anyone that lives in United Britannia and Hibernia is eligible to run politically once they turn eighteen and anyone can vote at the same age.   The only political positions available for vote is member of the Council. The Council consists of 250 members, and elections are held every five years.

Current and major issues

At this time, witches in United Britannia and Hibernia have a few major political issues on their mind: criminal punishment, Council and Magisterium control, individual control, and human contact.

Political parties

Of course, political parties vary widely, so the table below only includes a majority of the party's opinion. The Statera party is so diverse that this table is not helpful to explain their views.

Election process

Elections for the Council are held every five years. Running for a Council position is the financial responsibility of the candidate, so only the wealthy can typically participate.   About eight months before the vote (almost always held in January), the candidates may put their names forth to the Magisterium. The Magisterium will then consider and usually only approve about half of the candidate's names. After those names are released (usually about a month later), preliminary votes are held to reduce the number of candidates to about one hundred and eighty. In January, the major election is held, and the Council members are thus elected.   Council members are generally elected for their entire lives; it is rare for a major shakeup to occur within the Council. Additionally, many families are considered "government families;" i.e., there have been many generations of Council members.
