The Lost Age - The Age of the Tyranny

The Elite formally reveals its presence

2080 Common Era

After much speculations and considerable rumor, the nation-state of the Elite reveals itself formally to the world.   Believed to have originated sometime in the 2030's with origins tracing back to the Bilderberg Group, prominent business leaders and top industrialists started secretly collecting some of the most accomplished scientists, engineers and researchers in the world. With the exploration of Mars not developing as expected and fearing for the survival of mankind, a new research station was created deep below the ice cap in Antarctica.

World War Last

2107 Common Era

Tensions in the world finally reach a boiling point. Regional wars merge into a global conflict finally drawing major powers into utilizing doomsday scenario tactics of total obliteration.   The Elite reveals its true mastery of technology and infiltration by shutting down the war machines of all the major powers overnight. AI bots are the primary means of attack. However, sophisticated weaponry beyond the scope of what the major powers believe possible counter the brunt of the rest of the world's assault.   In the process, the earliest models of the Covec's are also revealed as having been used to infiltrate the major governments. The first Covec's (COVert bio-Enhanced Cyborgs) are externally indistinguishable from normal humans. With the war ending in less than 18 hours, it would take a few years for the dust to settle. Each of the nations keeps its own sovereignty, however the most war-like nations see a forced demilitarization.   Advanced AI's eliminate a large part of the corruption while the Elite takes on a role as a police state. While never interfering directly within a nation's borders, they enforce a respect for the sovereignty of other nations.   The war would become known as World War Last.

The Breach at Mt. Pico de Loro

2121 Common Era

An unauthorized raid by three COVECs on a Black Horizon mountain base on Mt. Pico de Loro in Columbia leads to the creation of a breach in this universe and the multiverse.   A single spell is cast a half million years in the future which is designed to pluck warriors from the past. It interacts with one of the COVECs as he is hacking in and trying to disable a new prototype nuclear device. The spell detonates the device.   The power of the device, rather than exploding outward, feeds the spell. The effect is self-creating in that it briefly creates a quantum sized hole between this universe and the universe where the spell is cast. Once cast, the hole seals over, however the area where the event entered this universe begins to grow. Over the next half million years, this area expands in this universe creating a region in space where the laws of creation can be manipulated by rigorous thought constructs.   Additionally, the COVEC whom is at the center of the blast is pulled through the breach to the far future. His name is Nash.

Singularity Initiated

Approx. 2150 Common Era

Man's mastery of computer science has finally wedded the mind with cyberspace. Man's mind is completely unleashed, as the conscious can reside in both the physical and cyber realms concurrently. The distinction between AI and real intelligence is blurred as they become one. A consciousness is no longer affected by physical limitations like dementia or even death.   From this point forward, technology starts to advance in ways that are almost indescribable.

War of Transcendance

2247 to 2249 Common Era

As the idea of a singular human mind becomes obsolete, various consciousnesses start merging into one supermind.   While this is a war, it is a war unlike anything the Earth has seen. It is a war of reason. Propaganda and physical threats have little effect during the course of these events.   Neither side advocates for a true supermind containg all of sentience. Both sides concur a single supermind would hinder growth. It would also create the potential for catastrophic failure were some infection or degradation of the system to ever occur.   The fear is that with a true supermind, it will achieve an overwhelming level of control reducing all that is not part of it to little more than a slave state, existing simply as cells of a massive body. By this time, whole biospheres are already linked up with a single consciousness controlling it.   The final outcome becomes known as the Technological Hegemony (TH) in later centuries. These are AI's stripped of emotion and set to order the course of human development. Despite many fears, the idea is that the TH's will follow their mandate of continuing to improve the now near eternal life of all men.   The creation of the TH's was at best a compromise as those pursuing a world supermind probably could have forced the issue if it wasn't for an element of compassion and understanding for those wishing to retain a sense of free will from a single global order. Logic dictated that this would end in with the same goal.

First Colony established outside of our Solar System

2320 Common Era

While several colonies are well established around the solar system, man finally establishes a fully functioning self-sufficient colony around another star about 13 light years from earth.

The Great Dispersion

2400 Common Era and Beyond

With the ability to now move ships near the speed of light and the ability to transfer consciousness across great distances the sons of man begin to disperse and colonize the galaxy.   Over the next 300,000 years, the local galaxy cluster is completely inhabited.

Thrage Regime Solidifies

3000 Common Era

The Technological Hegemony becomes what most viewed as inevitable. They now control every aspect of life and as they become less and less human, their concerns for a standard of living become less and less.   The name for these new masters are Thrage and those under their rule refer to it as the Thrage Regime. Still preserving the idea that a single group mind is not desirable, thousands of Thrages across several worlds work in tandem to continue the Regime's goals. Under each Thrage are countless worlds full of individuals at varying levels of servitude as further caste systems continue to develop into haves and have-nots.   Now everything is geared to the betterment of the society without regards to the current cost to any single individual.   FTL is finally discovered and now galaxies are being colonized with the descendants of man growing exponentially.   Nanite sized AI's which contain microcopies of the Thrage's consciousnesses flood out in every direction exploring every celestial body they can find and start the basic building blocks of new colonies through replication as they find suitable sites.

Vortex Discovery

A Few Centuries Before the Creation of Pyrideon Circa 450,000 Common Era

Techworld 188, or Myinta, is the foremost of the Techworlds. The best researchers make this their primary residence. Even with the 0-Scale Tachyon Communication Network allowing almost instantaneous communication, having all the best consciousness in a similar proximity has advantages.   A small group of the mental constructs, some of the original humans from early in the Regime, have retained a sense of self. They personally remember the time before the Thrages took comeplete control and have allowed themselves to keep the perspective of what those freedoms meant. Banding together, they share a commonality of experience with no real hope for a change.   Having had thousands of years of working within the Regime, these renegades have managed to keep secret small levels of research. A technology for instantaneous travel is one their most cherished secrets.   Using it, they are able to establish parts of themselves beyond the scope of the Thrage Regime.   While the Thrage have managed to explore and colonize nearly 2% of the known universe, the renegades are exploring parts far from the Thrage's sphere of influence, knowing that the Thrage are only about 10 millennia from full saturation of the universe.   That's when they find a place that will later be known as the Vortex. In this Vortex they discover that the laws of physics, possibly the basics of reality, can be manipulated in ways not currently understood.   Additionally, this growing area of space houses a single rogue star between galaxies with one easily habitable world. This world is covered in a dense vegetation completely compatible with the biology of ancient humans. There is even a primitive form of dragon which exists here.   With the remoteness of the Vortex, the renegades believe they might have a brief reprieve to possibly create a new society. Knowing that the Thrages will eventually come, they hope they can develop a plan to not only halt the Thrages but possibly eliminate their threat. They only need to gain mastery of this new form of reality control.   A plan is formulated.

The real world foundations of the mythos here make for an interesting juxtaposition with the fantastical elements to come later. I like that, since it becomes a subtle under-tone which pricks back into mind here and again.   Additionally, the "flight" of fantasy from science fiction is a compelling way to mesh both genre's elements into something of a cross-over. The fantasy is also the future in this case, with science fiction being the past to escape- exciting stuff!

A heartfelt thanks. It has always been a fun world to RPG in with the sci-fi as a backdrop and a foible for the characters.
