Shalingra Magic (Commoner Magic)

The world of Camoray is highly magical and as such, almost all the races of have some innate level of magical ability. For some, like dwarves, it is rather uniform and manifests almost identically from one dwarf to the other. For others, like elves and humans, it can take on many forms, often manifesting in such a way as to display their interests and focuses in life.   Shalingra magics are very basic, like the simplest of cantrips. Whereas cantrips often display a certain level of versatility, shalingras are simplistic and perform only a single task.   Common shalingras for personal use might be things like freshen breath, detangle hair, clean teeth, repair minor clothing damage, ignite fire (enough flame to light a single candle), cut fingernails, know direction (which way is North), etc.   Many craftsmen and tradesmen know shalingras common to their trade. A weaponsmith might know hone or sharpen, while an armorsmith might know remove dent or polish. Tailors often know basic dyeing and cutting shalingras. Seamstress and weavers might know common stitching or threading shalingras. Most merchants know the shalingra for their area which verifies if a coin is of the correct mint (which in turn has often been minorly enchanted to react to the shalingra.) Mapmakers and booker binders might know simple copy shalingras, Jewelers would know basic shalingras to detect various elements of a gem or possibly help cutting or setting gemstones. Farriers would know simple shalingras like remove nail (from a horseshoe) or something which would calm an agitated horse, butchers would know preserve meat, brewers would know simple shalingras which remove bad yeasts and to seal bottles, masons might know shalingras to cause mortar to set up quickly or possibly slow the time it sets up.   A shalingra will rarely affect over 1 sq. ft. of material or 2 lbs. Also, they generally only affect one type of material, as in a shalingra with the same name for different crafts won't cross over. Polish for a brash smith is different than Polish for a carpenter.   Overall, the average human, elf, or halfling knows about five to ten such shalingras. Someone who has never had magical training (ability to cast arcane spells) can only learn a maximum number of shalingras equal to their intelligence score. Arcane casters can learn an unlimited number – however many cantrips due to their versatility can perform multiple functions with but one cantrip and it is beneath many arcane users to bother learning more than a few shalingras.   Regardless of the number known, it requires that they are taught by someone else. Learning a shalingra takes about 5 hours for a non-caster, 1 hour for a divine caster, and 10 minutes for an arcane caster. Developing a new shalingra can only be accomplished by an arcane caster and requires a minimum of 5 days work. Part of the difficulty is in setting a very specific function and then making it simple enough that a non-caster can use it.   With regards to arcane users, shalingras are best compared to knowing pieces of music. While they may know several different shalingras and find their use easy, they still need to practice each one on a regular basis. This is why it still cost skill points for an arcane user to utilize shalingras.   Shalingras are generally vocal only (a few are somatic only), and require a standard action to employ.

Coin Authentication

This shalingra is used to verify if a coin is authentic by detecting the underlying magic present from when the coin was minted.   Generally, only coins above 1 GP in value have a magic signifier placed on them.   Many of the coins from the major cities, especially those of 1 GP value or higher, are often minted with a press which has the ability to impart a magical signifier to the coin indicating that the coin is authentic.   The magic is crafted in such a manner that if the coin is moderately damaged or looses more than 5% of its volume (usually through shaving) the magical signifier is destroyed.   When subjected to a simple Shalingra designed to detect the authenticity of the coin, the signifier will either glow standard colors for the city or sometimes even have rune mark of the city glow on the face of it for a few seconds. The shalingra works on all coins within about a three-foot radius.
