Chrailis Surrounding Areas

The game setting is a large metropolis – basically a city/nation. Any actual name for it would be Chrailis, however most just refer to it as the City - as it is the only city they know. There are villages, there are hamlets, and there is but one City. The nearest city of any size is over a thousand miles away and as such, little in the way of trade, diplomacy, or even travel exists outside the City. Even knowing the name of the nearest city would be of the most trivial nature. The distinction between nation and city is not made by the inhabitants – only something scholars would speak of in academic settings.   Chrailis sits in one of the arms of the large super continent known as Mashaloopa—the opposite side of the planet Camory from the other major continent of Arisilon.   Chrailis sits in the middle of an immense jungle sitting, the nearest ocean is over 1000 miles away. Nearby is the mighty river Zygarosse which slightly loops to the south around the main part of the metropolis, flowing west to east. The actual walled city center (walled for aesthetics, not for any real defense) lies on a large plateau overseeing the surrounding jungle. The plateau itself is roughly 10 miles (along the length of the river) out to about 3 miles wide from the river.   To the north of the plateau and the river the land rises steeply and levels out several miles later to tiny areas of cleared off pasture and farm land, inhabited largely by halflings. Distantly to the far northwest are savannahs and plains.   Going upriver about 500 miles one comes to the junction of two rivers which form the Zygarosse – one river descending from an ancient mountain range (which is too far to be seen from Chrailis) and with the other river forming in the jungles in the distant southwest. Not much in the way of villages exists going upriver.   Going downriver about 50 miles the river lets out into a humongous inland freshwater lake known as First Dawn on maps (as translated from Draconic, or more accurately First Dawn Nest). Most call it Dawn Lake. Due to its size (almost double our Lake Superior), it in many ways can be considered to be an inland ocean with waves and even slight tidal occurrences. All along this 50 miles stretch and even out on the edges of the lake for about 20 or 30 miles in either direction, small hamlets exist devoted largely to fishing industries. Not much exists in deep sea fishing or exploration due to numerous sea monsters and the rumored threat of a deep lake species of aquatic beings.   Between Dawn Lake and the city, on the northern side of the river is the Quirk Woods. More of a temperate woodland due to the cultivation of the inhabitants, there is a large presence of Fey in the woods. While the woods are not hostile to visitors, few feel welcome.   To the south of the river, the lands become more marshy, becoming the Black Marshes. It is here that Lizard Men start to dominate.   Anywhere out to about 50 miles is probably peaceful and safe for low level character to travel, much farther out, and the protection of the city diminishes quickly and any traveler really is in the wild and at the mercies of whatever they find.
