Aiatali, Mother of the World

The Great Mother

In the beginning, Aiatali breathed onto the world. From her breath sprung life, which called itself Ayun. From Ayun sprang Rheyir, the Destroyer, for nothing can live which cannot die, and nothing can be created which cannot be destroyed. Upon seeing the death and destruction rained down by Rheyir, Aiatali's heart broke, and she wept. Her brother, Phaixrous, took her heartbreak from her, and from it he created Uas, who is the seas and the oceans.   Rheyir came to love Ayun, and Ayun loved Rheyir. They ran away together, intent on building their own life, but Aiatali was a jealous mother, and she would not part with her child. She tore the world apart in search of Ayun – an event which men call The Shattering – and when she found them, her wrath was terrible to behold. Aiatali made the very earth itself swallow Rheyir. Ayun she flung to the heavens, never to return to Tyrannoch.

Aiatali's Rest

It is believed by the hill people of Kierastahd that after Aiatali banished her brother to the southern continent and her children to the bowls of the earth and the skies above it, she was alone. Her heart froze, and she laid down among the high mountains to sleep. They believe she sleeps there still, and that if one looks through the peaks towards Aiatali's Rest, you can see her breathing. Scholars know this is only a trick of the mists, but men have avoided that place for generations, for fear of waking the sleeping god.   See also: Phairoux, Ayun, Rheyir the Destroyer, Uas, God of the Seas
