Chaos

the Void

Chaos is both the beginning and the end. The singular root of everything and nothing. The point from which all of creation is born, and the void into which it all vanishes.

Chaos’s Champions

Alignment: Neutral
Suggested Classes: Cleric, sorcerer, warlock
Suggested Cleric Domains: Death, Knowledge, Life
Suggested Backgrounds: Acolyte, hermit, sage

Despite their deity's name, those that truly serve Chaos eschew chaotic leanings in favor of a true neutral alignment. The affairs of good and evil do not concern them; they rise above such petty differences to serve in the name of creation itself.

Chaos’s Favor

Chaos does not pick out champions as chosen favourites in the way that the Olympians or Titans do. Their servants are dedicated acolytes that act in the name of Chaos of their own volition, and not at the primordial entity's bidding.

Why did you seek to serve as a champion of Chaos? The following table offers a few suggestions.
D6 Circumstance
1 You have always believed in a higher power - one older and more powerful than any Olympian.
2 You lost your faith in the gods a long time ago, and now only the Void gives you a sense of purpose.
3 As a child you were taught to respect the circle of life, which began with Chaos.
4 You seek to test the limits of the gods' immortality, and you believe Chaos holds the key.
5 No matter how many secrets you learn, your curiosity for the deeper mysteries of the cosmos remains.
6 What is a god to a non-believer? You wonder if there is an answer to that question.

Devotion to Chaos

Following Chaos means placing yourself apart from the petty squabbles of gods and mortals to achieve greater understanding of the cosmos. As a follower of Chaos, consider the ideals below as alternatives to those suggested for your background.
Chaos’s Ideals
D6 Ideals
1 Devotion. My devotion to my god is more important to me than what they stand for. (Any)
2 Mystery. There is so much we do not understand about our own existence. I want to change that. (Any)
3 Knowledge. I want to learn all there is to know. (Any)
4 Indifference. Morality is nothing more than a set of chains we choose to bind ourselves with. (Neutral)
5 Philosophy. Who is more important - the creation or the creator? (Any)
6 Emptiness. I struggle to comprehend the trials and tribulations of my companions. (Neutral)

Earning and Losing Piety

You increase your piety score to Chaos when you expand their influence in the world in a concrete way through acts such as these:
  • Engaging someone in a meaningful philosophical discussion
  • Unlocking greater knowledge about history and the arcane
  • Acquiring a powerful ancient artefact
Your piety score to Chaos decreases if you diminish their influence in the world or contradict their ideals through acts such as these:
  • Destroying something ancient or unique
  • Voluntarily getting involved in a petty squabble or argument
  • Showing favor to another deity over Chaos
