Furore Ocean
Pronounced: foo-ROAR-ray
The Furore Ocean is the vast turquoise expanse that stretches along the eastern side of the Tydian mainland and surrounds the island continent of Cevoryn. Its waters are strikingly beautiful, known for their bright blue-green color, luminous reflections, and strangely sweet scent. From the shore, it can look peaceful and inviting, and for the people of Cevoryn, it is a central part of daily life.
Despite its beauty, the Furore Ocean harbors a specific yet dangerous secret: it must never be consumed. The water is safe to touch, swim in, sail across, and fish from, but drinking or swallowing it can burn the mouth, throat, and body from within. Because of this, Cevo people grow up learning strict water safety around the ocean, especially when swimming, diving, or teaching children near the shore.
The Furore’s altered nature is tied to Lumina’s ancient magic and unfinished work, making it more than a natural ocean. It is beautiful, useful, culturally important, and deeply respected, but never treated casually. Later in the series, Tarana’s connection to Lumina allows her to purify small portions of the Furore temporarily before eventually healing the entire ocean permanently. This makes the Furore Ocean one of the clearest symbols of Lumina’s legacy, Tarana’s growth, and the restoration of balance in Tydas.
Geography
The Furore Ocean is considered one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Tydas. Its waters are a vivid turquoise, shifting between teal, aqua, and blue-green depending on the depth, weather, and light.
At dawn, the surface catches the sun's first gold and glows softly, turning the waves bright and glassy. By midday, the ocean becomes dazzling, its shimmer flashing across the water like scattered jewels. At sunset, warmer colors stretch over the turquoise surface, giving the Furore a molten, radiant quality before night settles in. Beneath moonlight, the ocean becomes quieter and more ethereal, its shimmer softening into silver-blue light that makes the waves appear almost enchanted.
Though its water must never be consumed, its beauty is undeniable, and many consider the Furore one of the clearest signs of Lumina’s lingering presence in the world.
Location
The Furore Ocean is the great eastern ocean of Tydas, stretching along the far edge of the world’s known mainland. Its waters lie against the eastern side of the Creation Mountains and continue down along the eastern mainland coast, shaping the borders of several lands. Farther south, the Furore runs along both the eastern and southern coasts of Thosta, where forested cliffs, river mouths, marshlands, and coastal greenery meet the turquoise sea.
Since the ocean surrounds Cevoryn, it is central to Cevo geography, travel, trade, and daily life. Anyone sailing to or from Cevoryn must cross the Furore, and its beauty is one of the first signs that travelers are nearing the island.
Because of its position, the Furore serves as both a natural border and a sacred waterway, connecting the eastern lands of Tydas while also separating Cevoryn from the rest of the world.
Localized Phenomena
Acidity and Danger
The Furore Ocean is dangerous not because it burns on contact, but because of what happens when its water is consumed. To the eye and nose, the ocean seems almost inviting. Its turquoise waters carry a naturally sweet, pleasant scent often compared to ripe tidefruit, fresh rain mixed with honey, or sweet wind drifting in from the sea. This deceptive sweetness has led many travelers to assume the water must be safe to drink.
In truth, the Furore’s water undergoes a chemical-magical reaction when it mixes with humanoid saliva or digestive enzymes. The moment it enters the mouth, it becomes highly acidic, burning the tongue, throat, and stomach. Small amounts can cause severe pain and injury, while larger amounts may lead to internal scarring or death. The reaction is specifically tied to humanoid digestion, meaning animals may be able to drink from the Furore safely, while Tydians and other humanoid peoples cannot.
This danger has shaped centuries of ocean safety across eastern Tydas. Many historical accidents occurred because sailors, travelers, or stranded crews trusted the ocean’s sweet scent and drank from it, believing they had found fresh water. Some entire crews were lost this way. Because of that history, no experienced sailor draws untested water from the Furore, and muses, rulers, fishers, and coastal elders warn travelers clearly: the Furore may be touched, crossed, fished, and swum in, but it must never be swallowed.
The Furore's Scent
Here are some of the many different aromas that people have stated the Furore smells like:
- fresh rain mixed with honey
- sugared citrus peel
- nectar from a flower just after rainfall
- melon, pear, and salt air
- sun-warmed fruit left in a market basket
- coconut milk
- rainwater gathered in a clean shell
- honeyed mist rolling off the waves
- sea breeze passing through flowering vines
- golden fruit syrup thinned with cool water.

Does anyone know, why this happens? If Tarana will be able to heal the ocean, then I guess at some point it was normal, then changed to how it currently is and that must have had a reason, right?
