Higglefish

Observation Log of KLO Mimi Lakes: Higglefish

Praymonth the 18th, Year 54 of the Century of the Nymphs, 26th Cycle
I was asked to write about the Higglefish while I went to the Point. There aren't many at the Point, so after I helped boost one Signal Tower, I took Almeta Bearach to the east of the Great Forest, where the closest nesting grounds of the Higglefish are. It also happens to be close to Turtle Island. So we went there afterwards. Ah, I've been asked to write about that in a different report.
So, the Higglefish. They are very colourful fish about the length of my forearm (34 centimetres). Each fish can change their colours based on what they are feeling. If they are hungry, they are a yellow to brown colouring. If they are lost, they are a blue to black colouring. If they are ready to mate, they are a maroon to purple colouring. There are some other colours, but not many people have watched them that well. AB thinks that green is scared, and I think red is hostile. One fish kept trying to bite me, and it was red. AB said it was trying to protect a green fish that only turned green after I bumped into it. I got a little excited when we found the area.
Anyways, the Higglefish like to stay close to their nesting grounds or go out in groups, so you will often find they all look similar colours when the group is about the Ocean. In the nesting grounds, though, there are a lot of colours swirling and swimming around the whole time.
We haven't worked out what white is. There were only two fish that were white - a fully grown one and a smaller one, but they didn't pay any attention to us. At least not directly. AB noted that after the white fish went into different rock pools, other fish would come and approach or watch us, but the white fish would casually leave and keep swimming around the nesting grounds.
I didn't hurt any fish. They aren't poisonous nor taste very good, so I guess that's why there are so many nesting grounds of Higglefish around the Ocean. They tend to stay clear of North City though, so that's another reason why they aren't eaten that often, I guess.
Diplomat Mayder said that the Mermaid school in Southern Cove are researching more about the fish. They know that the fish can interact with Magi-clams for example, but as they don't make sounds, the Mermaids are still needing to work out how they communicate with other species. Else why haven't whales eaten them all this time?

I love the narrative and conversational style of your writing. It definitely feels like someone reporting back on their experience, and it's very visual. The questions the narrator asks have also sparked my own curiosity--what does white mean? Why haven't the whales eaten them?
