Head Researcher Sarutaba Chino (a.k.a. 猿田場 知野)

A woman who, despite her lower-class background, showed a startling aptitude for mathematics and other intellectual disciplines from her childhood. Noticing this talent among the workers under him, a minor noble from Osaka adopted Chino into his family and set her to work as his chief accountant, a task to which she took with great zeal, while pursuing her own individual projects on the side.
When her adopted father fell ill, she took the opportunity to experiment with many herbal remedies of her own design and, though it seemed he would make a recovery, an unexpected interaction caused the man’s death a few days later. Not officially blamed for the Sarutaba lord’s murder, Chino was still driven out of Osaka, traveling instead to Wakigami, where she hoped to start an apothecary. It was not long before her abilities were noticed by Tōdaisen Nobuhara who, with the Daimyō’s approval, hired her as the Hashinara Clan’s official head of scientific research and development.

Sarutaba Chino was set to work immediately after joining the Hashinara Clan, tasked with developing a method of containing the black mist emitted by the obsidian stones in Tosa Province. It took her only a few days to devise and build a complex, reinforced glass cylinder appropriate to the task.
Impressed with her work, Katsusada Shishauezaemon then ordered that Chino begin research on explosives and their applications in warfare.
Following the Hashinara capture of Izumi Province, Chino was sent to the area and established as its Bugyō. She has since begun building new infrastructure dedicated to make the province a center of scientific research and discovery.
