Drinax

HAZARD - remnant biological weapons in death zones. Extreme caution required. Containment suits must be worn in death zones. Decontamination and quarantine required. Not all death zones are fully marked.

HAZARD - residual radiation zones present from historic nuclear weapon detonations. Monitor with radiation counters at all times. Radiation zones are not consistently marked or identified.
Drinax is a small world that is tidally locked to its red dwarf star. The surface is almost completely uninhabitable and desolate. It is notable for the Floating Palace of Drinax, the last remaining settlement. This was formerly exclusively the royal palace, but now is home to the tens of thousands of people who make up the remnant population, as well as the downport of the starport.

Geography

Drinax is a small (6,400 km diameter) world that is tidally locked to its red dwarf star. It suffered a relatively recent massive bombardment from an Aslan war fleet that glassed most of the habitable twilight zone of the planet, rendering it almost completely uninhabitable. The remnant of the planet was already either naked desert under the perpetual noon sun, or locked in an icy deep-freeze on the night side.

History

Drinaz was originally seat of the Dukes of Drinax under the Sindalian Empire, and a local administrative centre of that part of what is now Tlaiowaha Subsector. After the fall of the Sindalian Empire, Drinax maintained its technology and established itself as a successor state to the empire - the Kingdom of Drinax, dominating many of the local systems and acting as a bulkwalk against Aslan expansion.   Drinax continued to advance, and reached TL 16 in several areas.   When war with the Aslan came though, Drinax, although technologically more advanced, were overwhelmed by massive force of numbers. Drinax was destroyed by orbital bombardment with nuclear and biological weapons, and all surface and orbital settlements were destroyed. For reasons known only to themselves, the Aslan spared the Floating Palace however, which was the seat of government - a vast grav platform that was one of the wonders of the subsector. Possibly they wanted the King of Drinax and his court to suffer a long and slow death from starvation. Despite this, the palace survived, as the ornamental handing gardens were quickly repurposed for food production, and the entire population now lives in the floating palace, descendants of those courtiers, scholars and soldiers who were present at the time. Although Drinax lost much of its most advanced technology and capabilities in the devastation, much was preserved, as the floating palace was also home of the most advanced scientific institutions as well. Drinax has now settled back at TL 14 - although more advanced technology is probably still recorded in the archives, there is a lack of industrial base to take advantage of it.
