Siren's Sickness

Transmission & Vectors

Siren's Sickness is a rare condition afflicted on those who overdose on the commonly homemade sailors remedy for sea sickness Steadferoll. It is made using many naturally-found ingredients of the sea, however the most common ingredients used are citrus, fish oils and an ocean floor herb family not dissimilar from seaweed. Depending on the additional ingredients used or the location the ingredients were picked from, the remedy can have vastly different effects, but it always reduces the nausea caused by sea sickness.

Causes

The major factor in becoming afflicted with Siren's Sickness is whether or not the herbs used were grown in Siren waters, for siren culture often involves singing to plants to increase growth rate. One dosage of Steadferoll will often leave the consumer unscathed, however pushing into the higher numbers with Siren-grown herbs will see the consumer begin to experience the major symptoms of Siren's Sickness.

Symptoms

Like the painful torture of having a song stuck in your head, the most dangerous symptom of Siren sickness is the insatiable urge to identify the source of the gorgeous singing creeping slowly into your head. These songs are the ones that were sung to the plants used in the Steadferoll, and are impossible to get out of your mind until the sickness is over. The more pressing matter is that the song becomes addicting, and when coming off of the Sirens sickness, those afflicted with it will take more Steadferoll to re-invigorate the voice once more. In this manner, Steadferoll is sometimes used as a drug by sailors for many different reasons. Whilst other symptoms include rapid eye movements, increased sweating and in some cases a slow-forming insanity from hearing the Sirens call to long, the most worry some of these are the flaming temperatures. These temperatures often drive those afflicted to jump into the waters, not only to cool down but in a way luring the aforementioned to the source of the singing, often causing death by drowning. These factors have caused a rather high mortality rate for those afflicted with Siren's Sickness - but as long as Steadferoll is taken in moderation, the medication is incredibly effective at removing the initial nausea.

Treatment

No known treatment exists for a Sirens Sickness, and it is common knowledge amongst sailors and deckhands that the long wait in removing the Steadferoll from your system is the best thing for you. A supervisor is often assigned in these cases, less risk the afflicted jumping overboard or taking additional Steadferoll.

Prognosis

The symptoms as they appear are as such: The creeping sound of the sirens call arrives alongside the sweating anxiousness after about an hour, the rapid eye movements occur in attempts to immediately locate its source soon after, the blazing hot temperatures begin an hour later and the urge to begin jumping in after the Sirens call soon after that. On the comedown from the addiction (which is usually about 12 hours from consumption) the sweating is drastically increased, the temperatures begin to fall, and within two hours of the Steadferoll leaving the system the Sirens singing halts.
