Mitirian Cuisine

Food prepared by those living near Mitiris. This form of cooking was developed by necessity to take advantage of what few edible things are left after the Order of the Rod have claimed their share of any crops.

Execution

The region around the town of Mitiris is far from productive. Outside of the area by the river that floods every year, there are few places where plants can grow or animals graze. What crops are grown are taken by the Order of the Rod as taxes, leaving little to nothing for the wider population to eat.   In order to overcome this, those living near Mitiris have found alternatives and created dishes using things that would be repellent to many, and outright dangerous if not prepared correctly.
Pests
One of the solutions to a lack of food has been to make use of pests which normally devour crops. One of the chief culprits is the locust, and it has become a regular part of Mitirian dishes. They are typically roasted and then coated in honey (when availble) or the juice from the doliph cactus.
Dangerous Fish
The jarin is one of the fish that is not claimed by the Order. This is because it can be highly poisonous if not prepared correctly. Even prepared correctly the taste leaves much to be desired so dishes containing jarin tend to be heavily spiced and make use of the roots of the badin reed whose sweet taste helps cut through that of the fish.
Toxic Cactus
Another stable of Mitirian cuisine in the choking cactus, so named because eating the flesh causes the throat to swell shut. The poison can be removed by first soaking it in water, drying it and then boiling the cactus. The cooked cactus has a texture not dissimilar to potato and it is used in place of grain or bread.
Important Locations
The dangerous nature of the food used in Mitirian cooking means that most dishes are cooked in multiple different pots and pans to prevent contamination if something goes wrong. They are served in the same way and it is traditional for everyone to start with a different dish so that only one person will need help if something isn't quite right.
