C10-95-05-04 - Stonesmiths Attacked

There can be few in Khezdur who are not aware of the importance of the Stonesmiths. An ancient family who have worked alongside the Magrannors since the halls were founded, their name is known to be well earned as they count most of the finest stoneworkers and shapers among their number. The cavern they run is typically a beacon of peace and order, but last night that peace was shattered by a brazen attack by insurgents seeking to throw the halls into confusion.   At around 2 glasses past midnight the home of the Stonesmiths was assaulted by a well armed group. It seems that an intruder had attempted to infiltrate the residence using magic to conceal either their appearance or presence. Fortunately the Stonesmiths have spared no expense on their home's defences, being second only to that of Rocksoul Palace. The intruder triggered an alarm, alerting the family guards and summoning reinforcements from nearby in the cavern. According to eyewitness reports the leader of the insurgents had the build and stature of a human or elf, though others were of a more normal height and build.   When the lead insurgent failed to bypass the Stonesmith's defences his fellow traitors attacked the guards in order to cover his escape. We are told that three guards lost their lives and another six required healing. The insurrectionists made good their escape while the guards tried to help their wounded and fulfilled their primary duty, which is to ensure the leaders of their cavern remain safe.   There can be little doubt that this attack is related to the horrible murder of Nulgin Magrannor. The fact that Galen Stonesmith has been appointed as regent has clearly made him a target for the same cowardly assassins that struck at the former Magrannor. The presence of an elf reinforces the existence of a faction within the forest kingdom that wants the Halls to suffer. Whether this faction is supported by the elven queen and her court is a topic of much debate, though it may prove a moot point thanks to the decision to keep Khezdur safe by sealing the outer gates.   A reward has been offered for information leading to the capture or death of the elven insurgents, and other traitors lurking in our midst. All good people are warned not to approach these dangerous killers, just report any sightings to a nearby guard post.
