223 / 03 / 12 - Northern Villages Attacked

On Milday, 9^th Roth, reports reached Shaon of attacks on villages at the north east of the kingdom. Raids by bandits and goblins are not unusual in that region and most settlements have walls and enthusiastic defenders to deter attackers. Under normal circumstances such measures, along with patrols by the Earl of Shaon's soldiers, are enough to maintain a degree of security. But these were no ordinary raids.
According to the reports, the attacks began early on the 8^th. Unlike with the usual raids it seems there were no demands made, no bluster or attempts at intimidation, and not even any attempt to sneak in. There was simply a charge by short statured fighters in chain armour. The size and equipment of the attackers leaves little doubt that they were dwarves and while it has not been confirmed, it is feared that this may be a full invasion by the forces of Clan Magrannor.
The scale of the assault, and coordinated nature of the attacks across villages along the northern border lend credence to the idea of this being an outright declaration of war. Relations with the dwarves of the Magrannor Halls have been strained for forty years since they sent a force to steal relics from Shaon, and then demanded those relics when their plan was foiled by the heroes of Frostburn company. However, this would be the first time that the dwarves have launched an all out offensive.
Earl Argentiss has pledged to drive out the attackers, and has already sent out several companies of troops. Further reinforcements are expected to be sent from Bellcross and messengers have been sent to Clan Magrannor to demand answers.
