220 / 12 / 23 - Demon Attacks Continue

Attacks by small flying demons have plagued Chirin for a second night following the release of a swarm in the West Side market square. The fiends appear to be repelled by daylight and following their initial attack they sought shelter during the day. Despite a massive search by the patrol and groups of brave volunteers, several of the fiends managed to avoid detection due to both their small size and their horrifying means of reproduction.   For those fortunate enough not to have seen them, the demons resemble flying heads with bat like wings in place of ears. With a screech that can stun those that hear it, long fangs, and an an ability to inflict a deadly curse the only way to protect most of the citizens of Chirin was to impose a curfew. Even with the curfew and groups of patrollers maintaining watch through night, aided by more groups of volunteers, there were more yet casualties during the night.   We remind everyone that you are advised to stay indoors at night with windows shuttered and barred. Keep an eye on your friends and family, and if they start growing horns or fangs, or if their eyes change colour make sure they go to either the Mallory or one of the emergency clinics that have been set up in each district. There is no charge for treatment of the demonic curse, and it is in everyone's interest that those infected are treated swiftly.

New helmets for the Patrol.

Unlike in the oppressive regimes in nearby lands, open face helmets have long been the norm for the Chirin patrol. In those other lands soldiers working for the local tyrant have helmets that conceal their faces in order to inspire fear and make the soldiers seem less like people to both themselves and the people they oppress. Sadly the current crisis has meant there is a need to provide additional protection to our patrollers, and they will need to cover their faces.  Some patrollers have already been issued with newly developed faceplates that will help to guard them from the demons' curse. Based on a design provide by Perfin Searcher these new faceplates can be attached to the existing patroller helmets, and the Council has insisted that these coverings will be removed when the demon attacks come to an end.

Where are the Mercenaries?

While the people of Chirin responded heroically to the councils request for aid in this crisis, the mercenary companies that operate out of Chirin were conspicuous by their absence. Despite their skills and equipment being much more suited to hunting dangerous creatures than the average citizen's none of the formally registered groups responded to the call. That is not to say that no mercenaries responded, as several individuals did volunteer and were put in charge of several search teams, but none of the established groups made an appearance. Despite the grandiose claims of being heroes and protectors, teams like the Rainbow Crew seem unwilling to put in an appearance without the promise of a reward. This shocking lack of concern for the people of Chirin again brings into doubt whether these groups should be allowed to operate out of Chirin without a requirement to render aid when needed.

Potential Culprit Arrested

Captain Vyken Guardian continues to impress during these stressful times by not only ensuring his patrollers are well deployed to protect the people of Chirin but also managing to investigate the source of the demon attack. Speaking to us after reporting to the Council, Captain Vyken had this to say. "I can now annouce that we have located and arrested the person we believe to be responsible for releasing the demons in the square.  To avoid speculation the person we have arrested is a warforged named Daniel.  Witnesses in the square saw him carrying a large box and leaving it in the middle of the square, and we have several accounts that the demons came out of that box.  We have located that box and it contained a note which we believe relates to the demon attack.  Daniel is now being questioned about whether there are any other boxes of demons, and once we are satisfied that there are no further threats we will focus our efforts on finding any accomplaces and bringing them to justice.  In the meantime I ask for everyone to please remain indoors at night unless you are part of one of the groups detailed to keep watch tonight."

Volunteers help Protect Chirin

In the absence of the Outer Guard the Patrol has had to rely on brave volunteers to help them protect the streets and hunt down the demons.  Organised by the council, groups of these volunteers have been searching through every likely hiding place for the demons and providing warning when a swarm of them appears in the open.  Using his unrivaled knowledge of the arcane, Bowin Gableson has been directing these groups to where the demons are most likely to be, with special teams dispatched to eliminate the demons when they are located.  One of these teams is being led by onr of the new councillors, Nyls of Westerfield.  When asked why he had chosen to take such a dangerous role, Councillor Nyls replied that "My district is outside of the town, and hasn't been affected.  Leaving now doesn't seem like the right thing to do, and Regan already volunteered to look after East Gate.  Besides, I have this."  The this to which he refers is a short bow with a dark wooden grip and laiminated limbs.  Runes cover the limbs of the bow, and we have reliable reports that the runes have been glowing anytime the Councillor shoorts a demon.   Although Bowin, Nyls, and all the other volunteers are doing everything they can to protect Chirin until the Outer Guard get back, they can still use more help.  Every willing hand is welcome to help not just with tracking down the demons, but also to coordinate and transport supplies as necessary.  Anyone willing and able to help should report to the Council Building while it is still light.
