Structure
Selnaris Khi'Marinae is the High Archmage of Symmerin University. He is advised by a Council of Archmages -- old friends of the High Archmage, or simply interested professors of the school with the appropriate magical skill. Professors are expected to teach classes in their specialties in the university, and in return, their extremely comfortable lodgings are provided for, and they acquire full access to the Symmerin Public Library, alchemy lab, and spell research laboratory.
Culture
The culture of Symmerin is amazingly cosmopolitan. Because the University strongly believes in their motto, they welcome sentient beings from all over Known Space to study magic at their institution. Conversation typically slips through a slew of languages, all of which are being spoken at once, and it is not at all uncommon to see a plethora of different peoples sitting together in a host of different seating arrangements, drinking together at a tavern and arguing over the fine points of constructing the most effective summoning circles.
While abuse and racism do occur, they are strongly discouraged and disciplined harshly by the school's rules. This extends to an expectation that students and citizens will respect the varied cultures of the other inhabitants of the city. So if an Elf decides to insult a Balorian's sister, for example, and gets punched in the face for it, the Balorian will be complimented on their restraint.
Public Agenda
The Symmerin University exists to advance and share the study and exploration of magic. They believe that life is vastly improved for the common person by furthering the study of the Art.
Assets
Because the University was initially funded by Selnaris Khi'Marinae and a handful of powerful spellcaster friends, most of whom were former adventuring companions, it has more available money and resources than some small kingdoms.
