Princely Lands of Brondan

Princely Lands of Brondan (also known as Brondan Lands or The Union of Northern Lords).

History

North-west territories of the continent historically were considered cold, inhospitable lands with marshes, swamps, wild flooded woods and coastal plains, poorly suitable for agriculture, and, nevertheless, inhabited with barbarian tribes, that came from the far north.

In the 230s Taland people started expansion of the territory towards Misty Marshes . Disorganized tribal barbarian forces started loosing their lands village after village. In 238th Georg, the Brondan tribe chief's son, united the tribes to stand for their lands. They fought back and Taland people left them alone for now, focusing on expansion to the north-east woodlands instead.

Since then, this area was known as "United Brondan Lands". As time passed the union grew stronger and, due to stolen technologies and cultural influence from Taland kingdom, improved it's political organization and other aspects of their lives greatly. Every tribe chose it's lord - hereditary or by voting - which would represent the tribe or, as it was later characterised - the principality in the Union. Somewhat between 250s-350 this land was considered no longer as the Union of barbaric tribes but The Princely Lands of Brondan or The Union of Northern Lords.

There were multiple encounters between the Union and Taland during 350-405 attempting to take over the lands the Lords lost earlier and even expand the borders of Brondan Lands.

After fall of Taland kingdom in 405 and expansion of Vostrikian Empire to the west coast around 410-415, the Union had to defend their lands again. Vostrikia had much of technological advantage over the Union and took some territories by the coast in the North-West War. Empire did not expand their territory farther north to vanish the Brondan Union as there was enough resistance from the Brondan people and harsh envirnonment of flooded lands to make this war very much drawn-out and exhausting for both sides. After ten years of fights the Empire decided to build a wall along its northern border to protect theirselves from the Brondan revenge. That revenge took place later in 429, but was, however, unsuccessful.

Structure

Princely Lands of Brondan consists of 9 principalities which developed from 13 tribes that lived in this region in 200s:

Brondan, Mollnar, Leunord, Farrdan, Grout, Tadoe, Heffnir, Drendir and Vurra. Four tribes that were vanished during constant internal conflicts between the chiefs (and later - lords) and external wars with neighbouring contries were Boutt, Goln, Nordan and Feut. Their territories were taken by other tribes people or by the Taland or Vostrikia.

Economy

The Union have well-established trading relationships as each of the principalities has its own signature produce. Depending on the soil fertility, weather condition and landscape features each tribe from very old times adapted to survive and trade with its neighours.

Mollnar - fish, kelp and unique salt marsh herbs; Heffnir - variety of seafood, Leuniord - iron and copper ore; Drendar - wood and fur, Grout - copper ore and unique species from rocky habitats; Vurra - mushrooms; Brondan - freshwater fish, wood; Tadoe - wool and meat; Farrdan - meat, eggs, honey.

Since its early times people of north raided free villages to the south, and later, when Taland took over the coastal territories - Taland's settelments around the area of Windy Flats. This kind of business brought wealth and slaves to the Brondan chiefs/lords but it came with the reputation of aggressive barbarians.
