Yordle Species in Toriel | World Anvil

Yordle

The Yordle are a race of fey creature who generally take the appearance of mammalian bipeds.

Culture

The Yordle race have innate Magic within them which allow them to create with their mind. Also, they require far more social interaction with their own kind than humans do. They generally are a peaceful and secluded race, often marked with streaks of creativity. The power of their mind drive them toward this creativity, as the mental health of a yordle is very much dependent on the creqtion they make and the positive company they keeps.   This does not mean, however, that they are incapable of cruelty and evil. Some are evil genius, creating countless new way to prank and torture those they disdian.

Characteristics

Physical features

What differentiates yordles from other magical folk is that their physiology is more consistent between its members. Yordles are sometimes sexually dimorphic and much shorter than humans; both sexes rarely exceed 1 meter tall, with most averaging between 0.5 and 0.8 meters. Their skin texture ranges from being lightly covered in fur, to moderately fuzzy, to ultimately being excessively bushy. Their hands have four digits while their feet differ greatly depending on the individual (from four to two digit feet). Their fur tones run a much broader spectrum of colors than their Human counterparts; scientists agree that this evolutionary trait is used by male Yordles (which tend to be more fuzzy) to attract females of their species (which tend to be lightly covered with fur). Their large eyes feature a large, circular iris with a vertically oval pupil, and they generally have inferior vision in the normal spectrum of light than humans. Yordles nevertheless have much better hearing, due to their large fox-like ears and are able to see into the infrared spectrum of light, whereas humans cannot. Furthermore, they are commonly characterized by their dependence on language, as well as their creation and utilization of complex tools.

Aging

Yordles do not age in the same way as beings of the material realm do. Every Time a Yordle employs its innate power to shape reality with its mind, it comes at a cost—a sacrifice of a portion of their soul. Yordles, unlike other creatures, do not experience the effects of aging. Instead, their souls gradually diminish as they engage in creative thinking and influence their surroundings. This continuous expenditure of soul eventually leads to their disappearance, as no portion of their soul remains. Some Yordles resist the natural course of disappearing, knowing that their soul is just a fraction of what is use to be, they choose a simpler life, they intentionally refrain from engaging in profound thoughts to shield themselves, attempting to prolong their existence.

Biology

Yodles, inherently magical beings, possess a unique dietary requirement: emotions. They sustain themselves by feeding on various emotional energies, with the potency of the emotion directly correlating to its nutritive value.   Due to their feeding habits, it has become widely cautioned not to trust a yodle. Both acts of treason and expressions of love, being powerful emotions, are particularly appetizing to them.

Abilities

Yordles possess a unique ability tied to their minds. Similar to how the thoughts in the Feywild can impact the environment, the individual thoughts of a yordle can shape their reality. Fortunately, yordles rarely unite with a common purpose, as their innate power could have profound consequences on the world. Nevertheless, even an individual yordle's beliefs can influence their surroundings. If a yordle is convinced that the color red signifies speed, riding a horse with red armor will make it faster to this Yorlde. Similarly, if a yordle firmly believes in your strength, you may find yourself more capable than usual when in their presence.   Highly magical creature, yordles are vulnerable to being imprisoned inside cages made of Deep Lead. Touching Deep Lead gives yordles an electrical-like shock, and will disrupt their magic. Contact with Deep Lead will prevent a Yorlde innate power of creation to work.

History

Yordles are believed to be a group of small sentient creatures from the feywild. Overtime as civilizations advanced, so did yordles' appearances and capabilities. To this day, most yordles stay inside the feywild, only venturing out on rare occasions.

Apparition of the beastfolk and birdfolks

Yorlde were mostly independent from the court of the Feywild, living as a clan under the name of Grispoil. Meanwhile, the Autumn Court was home to the strange and magical: unicorns, giant spiders, and cursed goblins named Faevlins all called this court their own.   The court was under the guidance of a Unicorn whose horn was made of gold, but an old and cunning Faevlin named Veriga plotted to take over the court.   Veriga was a knowledgeable Faevlin and knew of Yordle, small creatures whose minds were said to affect the world beyond comprehension.   Aware of the physical weakness of his kind, Veriga had no hope to overtake the Autumn Court without the strength provided by numbers and started to plan how to bring goblins and other allies from the Material Plane directly into the Feywild.   Veriga started to sing songs of friendship, praising the Yordles' magical minds and sharing stories of his "friends" stuck on another plane under the spell of a tyrant, friends he described as animal-like creatures, with an emphasis on their altruism and friendship.   Over the years, Veriga befriended the Yordle clan, his stories bringing both joy and sorrow to the Yordles.   With the success of his song, Veriga initiated the final phase of his plan. He gathered fellow bards and artists to orchestrate the biggest show ever in the Feywild. Fireworks, magical effects, and music, along with the tale of how the Yordles could help him.   The show was a huge success, captivating the entire Yordle clan. Moved by Veriga's story, the ground shook, and a rift opened, dragging in those believed to be his friends. But these were not goblins; instead, numerous beast folk from the Beastland were dragged into the Feywild, Mapach, Jerbeen, Harengon, Hedge, and Vulpin.
